Despite numerous rumors and widespread speculation, casting for the next James Bond remains ongoing. Since Daniel Craig surrendered the license to kill, debate over who could or should become the next 007 has drawn intense attention.

As Amazon MGM Studios continues its search, the studio must balance legacy, reinvention, and audience expectations. A new James Bond has traditionally been a major cultural moment. Yet after the Craig era ended on what many considered a sour note, and with the studio now in full control, casting a new Bond for the 26th official film represents a pivotal moment for the franchise.

To help guide the process, Amazon MGM Studios has reportedly brought in a new casting director.

Amazon MGM Begins the Search for a New 007

In a statement shared on the official James Bond social media accounts, Amazon MGM Studios wrote: “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

According to Variety, the studio has already been auditioning actors for several weeks. The report also states that Amazon MGM Studios has hired Nina Gold to oversee the casting process, according to sources close to the project. Gold has not officially confirmed her involvement. However, she has worked on major productions including Game of Thrones, Les Misérables, The Martian, and Conclave. She also received an Oscar nomination for Hamnet in the Academy’s first year recognizing casting.

Gold was also involved in casting five Star Wars films and is credited with discovering Daisy Ridley for the role of Rey. Her reported involvement suggests Amazon MGM Studios is being highly selective in choosing the seventh official actor to portray Ian Fleming’s iconic character.

A High-Profile Creative Team Takes Shape

At this year’s CinemaCon, Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s head of film, briefly addressed the casting process for the next James Bond. “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,” she said. “It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

She also highlighted the filmmaking team assembled for the project. Denis Villeneuve, known for Blade Runner 2049 and the Dune films, will direct. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are serving as producers alongside executive producer Tanya Lapointe, with a screenplay by Steven Knight. Valenti added that Amazon MGM Studios is “setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy. That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”

Speculation Around the Next Bond Continues

For now, there is no indication of who may be the studio’s top choice for Bond. Online speculation has included Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, while Henry Cavill remains a popular fan favorite. Variety reports that 26-year-old British stage actor Tom Francis may be among those who have already auditioned.

Paul Feig, director of the 2016 all-female Ghostbusters reboot, recently said, “I’d rather Sydney [Sweeney] be the next Bond.”

While fans wait for an official casting announcement, earlier claims that someone had already signed for the role can likely be put to rest. The studio’s reported decision to bring in a veteran casting director with an extensive résumé also suggests the search remains in its early stages. In the meantime, debate over who should become the next James Bond shows little sign of slowing down.
