The leadership structure at Walt Disney World is about to undergo a major shift as Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum announced that Joe Schott will become the next president of Walt Disney World Resort following the retirement of longtime executive Jeff Vahle.

The announcement came as part of a broader shakeup within Disney Experiences that also included changes at Disneyland Paris and Disney Signature Experiences. The moves arrive during what Disney itself describes as one of the largest expansion periods in the history of its parks and cruise businesses.

According to Disney, Schott will officially take over the role by the end of July.

Joe Schott Takes Over as Walt Disney World President

Schott is no stranger to Disney operations. The veteran executive has spent more than four decades working across Disney’s global parks and vacation businesses, including leadership positions in Asia and Europe.

Most recently, Schott served as president of Disney Signature Experiences, the division overseeing Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, Adventures by Disney, Aulani, and other premium travel experiences. During his time leading Disney Cruise Line, the company launched new ships including the Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure as Disney aggressively expanded its cruise business.

Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum praised Schott as part of a broader quote on all the company’s announced shifts.

“Disney Experiences is in the midst of unprecedented expansion with more new projects underway across our global portfolio than at any other moment in our history,” Mazloum stated. “Joe, Natacha, and Christophe have a deep appreciation of the guest experience, possess extensive financial and operational expertise, and a proven ability to deliver at scale.”

Before overseeing Disney Cruise Line and Signature Experiences, Schott served as president and general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. Disney credited him with helping guide the park through a major expansion phase, including the opening of the Zootopia-themed land.

Schott also previously worked as chief operating officer of Disneyland Paris and held a leadership role tied to Tokyo Disney Resort operations in Japan.

Ironically, Disney noted that Schott’s journey with the company originally began at Walt Disney World as a Jungle Cruise skipper.

Jeff Vahle Retires After 36 Years

Schott replaces Jeff Vahle, who is retiring after a 36-year career with The Walt Disney Company.

Vahle became president of Walt Disney World Resort in 2022 after previously overseeing Disney Signature Experiences. During his tenure, Walt Disney World continued navigating the post-lockdown recovery era while simultaneously launching several major expansion projects across the parks.

However, his time leading the resort was also marked by significant fan backlash over controversial decisions, including the closure plans for the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom, as well as the permanent shutdown of MuppetVision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — both of which sparked widespread criticism from longtime Disney fans.

The Walt Disney World Resort remains Disney’s most important theme park destination financially and operationally. The Florida resort employs roughly 80,000 Cast Members and includes four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs, ESPN Wide World of Sports, and more than 30 resort hotels.

That makes the presidency of Walt Disney World arguably one of the most powerful operational roles within the entire company.

Disney Cruise Line Faces Massive Expansion

Schott’s move to Walt Disney World also comes during a critical period for Disney Cruise Line.

Disney simultaneously announced that Disneyland Paris President Natacha Rafalski will take over as president of Disney Signature Experiences, inheriting responsibility for Disney’s cruise expansion plans.

That rapid growth has become a major piece of Disney’s broader Experiences strategy as the company continues investing heavily into vacations, theme parks, and travel experiences while other areas of the entertainment industry face growing instability.

The leadership reshuffling suggests Disney wants executives with deep operational experience in place as the company navigates one of the most expensive expansion periods in its history.

Disney Continues Reshaping Its Parks Leadership

The announcement also included the promotion of Christophe Murphy to president of Disneyland Paris.

Murphy has worked for Disney for more than 35 years and most recently oversaw operations at Disneyland Paris during the rollout of Disney Adventure World and the opening of World of Frozen.

Taken together, the moves signal Disney is restructuring its leadership bench around experienced operators capable of managing large-scale international expansion projects.

For Walt Disney World fans, however, the biggest immediate takeaway is clear: Jeff Vahle’s tenure is ending, and Joe Schott — a longtime Disney executive with extensive cruise and international park experience — is preparing to take over leadership of Disney’s Florida resort empire.
