Amazon has launched a new Alexa feature that creates AI-generated podcast episodes based on user requests. The tool is part of the company’s Alexa+ service in the United States and marks another expansion of Amazon’s generative AI efforts.

Users can ask Alexa+ to create a podcast about almost any subject. The assistant gathers information, organizes the material, and generates an audio episode using synthetic voices, a male and female one. Amazon says users can adjust the tone, focus, and episode length before the podcast is created.

Amazon announced the feature on May 18. The company said users do not need to upload documents or prepare scripts. Alexa+ handles the research and audio production process automatically.

Completed episodes are delivered through the Alexa app and Echo Show devices. Amazon says the AI podcast feature can cover topics including history, sports, travel, hobbies, technology, current events, and more.

The launch adds another AI capability to Alexa+, which Amazon introduced earlier this year as an upgraded version of its voice assistant platform. The service also includes conversational responses, AI-powered shopping tools, and personalized assistant features.

Amazon commented on the new feature, saying “you’ll be able to create different types of custom audio on demand, from personalized news briefings to content based on the information and documents you want to share. This is just the beginning of a whole new way to learn, stay informed, and consume content that fits into your life.”

Amazon Expands Alexa+ With AI Audio Features

Amazon says its Alexa AI podcast system uses information from more than 200 news organizations and publications. The company listed Reuters, the Associated Press, The Washington Post, TIME, Forbes, Politico, Business Insider, and USA Today among its publishing partners.

Amazon also said it works with outlets owned by Condé Nast, Hearst, and Vox Media, along with hundreds of local newspapers across the United States.

According to Amazon, these partnerships help provide current and accurate information for generated podcast episodes. The company has not publicly explained how the system resolves conflicting information from different sources.

Examples shared by Amazon include AI-generated discussions about the Roman Empire, photography, music trends, and NASA’s Apollo missions.

Unlike traditional podcasts, the Alexa AI podcast feature does not rely on human hosts or recorded interviews. Instead, the system creates audio conversations through AI-generated narration and automated scripting.

AI Podcast Tools Continue Expanding Across the Industry

Amazon is one of several major technology companies investing in AI-generated audio tools. Google’s NotebookLM already offers AI audio discussions based on uploaded documents. Microsoft recently introduced a podcast-style AI feature for its Edge browser.

Spotify has also announced plans for personalized AI-generated audio briefings and podcast experiences through its Studio platform.

Technology companies increasingly view audio as an important area for generative AI growth.

At the same time, critics continue to raise concerns about transparency and accuracy. AI-generated systems can produce realistic narration while still including factual mistakes or misleading summaries. Others simply question how important human connection is to the process and final product.

Media analysts have also questioned how AI audio products could affect traditional podcast creators and journalism organizations. Human-hosted podcasts often depend on interviews, reporting, commentary, and audience engagement. AI-generated podcast systems focus more on automated summaries and personalized information delivery.

Questions Remain About Accuracy and Long-Term Adoption

Amazon has not released user figures for the Alexa AI podcast feature. The company also has not explained how corrections would work if generated episodes contain inaccurate information.

Privacy remains another issue surrounding voice assistants and AI systems. Researchers have previously studied how users interact with third-party Alexa services and the potential security risks connected to voice assistant ecosystems.

The Alexa+ podcast feature reflects a broader trend in the technology industry. Companies are increasingly using generative AI to create written content, images, video, and audio with limited human involvement.

Whether audiences will regularly use AI-generated podcasts instead of human-hosted shows remains unclear. For now, Amazon’s latest Alexa feature highlights how quickly AI audio tools are moving into mainstream consumer technology.
