A new stage production centered on the songs of “Weird Al” Yankovic is in development. Producers announced the project in May 2026. The show is titled Dare to Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical. Early reports describe it as a jukebox-style production built around the catalog of five-time Grammy winner Al Yankovic.

The title Dare to Be Stupid references Yankovic’s 1985 album and song. The project uses inspiration from Weird Al’s more than 40 year career.

The project marks a new entry in the growing trend of music-based stage adaptations. In this case, the focus is on parody songs and comedy tracks rather than a traditional biographical structure.

Creative Team and Development

Director Alex Timbers will lead the production. Timbers previously directed Broadway shows such as Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Beetlejuice, and Here Lies Love. He said of working with Yankovic, “I first fell in love with Al’s music with the release of ‘Dare to Be Stupid’ and have remained an avid fan ever since. Now, it’s a dream come true to work with one of my comedy heroes bringing an original story set to his beloved songbook to the stage. What Al, Anthony and Scott are creating is unexpected, subversive, meta, and hilarious and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.”

Writers Scott Brown and Anthony King are also part of the project. They previously collaborated on Beetlejuice and Gutenberg! The Musical!.

Yankovic is co-writing the original story with Brown and King. That structure places him directly in the development process rather than serving only as source material.

Yankovic said of the project, “Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theater community. Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment,’ and I think this musical should fix that problem immediately.”

Seaview is producing the show. Producer Greg Nobile said the project will focus on themes of creativity and individuality in early statements reported by industry outlets.

Songs and Format

The production will draw from Yankovic’s long-running catalog of parody and original comedy songs. Early reporting mentions tracks such as “White & Nerdy,” “Amish Paradise,” “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” and “Smells Like Nirvana.”

A complete song list has not been released. The creative team has also not confirmed how the songs will be staged within the narrative.

The structure of the show places it in the same general category as other jukebox musicals. However, early descriptions suggest it will use an original storyline rather than follow Yankovic’s biography.

A Weird Al Broadway musical has not yet set a performance schedule. Producers have not announced a theater, casting, or preview dates. The production remains in early development.

Yankovic’s Career Background

Yankovic has worked in comedy music for more than four decades. He first gained national attention in the 1980s through parody songs that reworked popular hits.

His career later expanded into television, film, touring, and voice acting. He has received five Grammy Awards. His 2014 album Mandatory Fun reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

In 2022, the Roku film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story was released. Daniel Radcliffe portrayed Yankovic in a fictionalized version of his life. Yankovic co-wrote and produced the project.

The Bigger & Weirder 2026 Tour

Yankovic will also continue his Bigger & Weirder Tour into 2026. The new leg follows a 2025 run that covered more than 60 cities in North America. The 2026 extension includes roughly 90 additional dates across the United States and Canada.

The 2026 tour began in late May 2026 and is scheduled to run through mid-October. Special guest Puddles Pity Party returns as the supporting act for many dates.

Current Status of the Production

No official opening date has been announced. Casting information and theater details also remain unconfirmed.

Like many Broadway productions in development, the project is expected to go through workshops and revisions before reaching the stage.

For now, the Weird Al Broadway musical remains in early development, with key creative roles confirmed but production timelines still open.
