Home Improvement was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1990s, often competing with Seinfeld for the top spot in the ratings. As nostalgia-fueled revivals have become increasingly common in Hollywood, the idea of a Home Improvement reboot has been floated more than once.

However, while promoting Toy Story 5, star Tim Allen suggested that the biggest obstacle is getting the cast back together.

Tim Allen Says The Reboot Is Stuck

In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Allen revealed that a Home Improvement reboot has stalled due to conflicts among former cast members. The actor has previously expressed enthusiasm for revisiting the series. In past interviews, he proposed a concept that would follow an older Tim Taylor as he navigates life as a grandfather while dealing with a new generation.

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen said. “They’ve got their own issues. I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”

Part of the challenge may be that the cast members who played Tim’s sons have followed dramatically different paths since the series ended in 1999.

The Taylor Boys Took Very Different Paths

Earlier this year, Zachery Ty Bryan, who played oldest son Brad Taylor, was sentenced to 16 months in prison. The actor pleaded guilty as part of a deal related to a felony DUI charge in 2024. It follows a lengthy series of high-profile legal troubles for the former child star.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Randy Taylor, largely stepped away from acting and has maintained a relatively private life. According to Page Six, he chose to pursue academics, graduating from Columbia University in 2010. However, Thomas did appear in four episodes of Allen’s Last Man Standing and directed three more.

Taran Noah Smith, who played youngest son Mark Taylor, has also remained largely out of the public eye since Home Improvement ended its run. He reportedly joined SpaceX around 2022 as a sea recovery technician, assisting with launches and recoveries.

Patricia Richardson Has Expressed Doubts

Patricia Richardson, who played Jill Taylor, noted in a 2024 interview that while Allen remains enthusiastic about a Home Improvement reboot, he has not discussed it with the rest of the cast. Though she has also appeared on Last Man Standing and Allen’s current series, Shifting Gears, Richardson remained doubtful about any attempt to revive the 1990s sitcom.

She also questioned whether the series could truly be recreated without Earl Hindman, the actor who played the iconic neighbor Wilson. Hindman passed away in 2003.

Can Home Improvement Ever Return?

With the former child stars now in very different places both professionally and personally, and with some cast members unconvinced a revival should happen at all, Allen’s latest comments suggest that a Home Improvement reboot remains a long way from becoming reality. Fans may still want to return to the Taylor household, but getting the entire family back together appears to be easier said than done.
