A friend of the site and constant source of excellent entertainment analysis, Valliant Renegade has been busy looking deep into the financial statistics for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What he has come across is information that every entertainment reporter out there should know — but they likely do not. Namely, movie tickets have surged in cost versus normal inflation. The same is true for marketing budgets. And… audiences may or may not be fitting into the size that you would expect given the headlines we see every day about record-breaking films.
One thing VR couldn’t discuss in his video are the Monday numbers for Dr. Strange 2. Because he recorded last night and the box office tallies came out this morning, he wasn’t yet aware that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fall-off is lower than analyst predictions based on the first two days (plus the preview Thursday). What that means is the movie may be on its way to a very steep drop-off over the next week. Nobody can see into the future (well, maybe both Doctor Strange and Scarlett Witch can… we’re confused by their powers), so anything can happen — but early momentum is heading negative for the film.
Here’s Valliant Renegade with much more:
After watching this video, we’re curious if there’s someone out there who wants to do some serious investigation. If we can reliably determine the average ticket prices of movies in any given year, wouldn’t it be interesting to see which movies throughout cinematic history have been the biggest cultural phenomenons based on the percentage of the American population which went to see them? Now that would be something worth finding out.
