Howard Stern Staffers Claim They Were Warned Not to Speak to Him at Parties as Insiders Describe ‘Cultish’ Workplace

Howard Stern’s shrinking radio empire is facing another round of ugly allegations, this time from former staffers who claim employees were actually warned not to approach the longtime shock jock at company parties.

Multiple insiders speaking with The U.S. Sun described the environment surrounding The Howard Stern Show as “cultish,” alleging that Stern was kept remarkably isolated from the people working beneath him and that employees were desperate to win the radio host’s approval.

The allegations arrive at an especially turbulent moment for Stern. His operation has undergone major layoffs this year, his remaining workload is reportedly being slashed to just one new show per week, former employees have reportedly battled over their severance packages, and Stern and his wife Beth just finished fighting a lawsuit brought by a former assistant alleging a hostile work environment.

Taken together, it paints a very different picture of life behind the scenes of one of radio’s most famous shows.

Staffers Were Allegedly Warned Not to Talk to Stern

According to The U.S. Sun, former employees claim there was effectively an invisible barrier separating Stern from his own staff — even when everyone was supposedly attending the same company function.

One insider told the outlet: “People were warned before any company parties not to speak to Howard, with the added note that people have actually gotten fired for it.”

The source went on to characterize Stern’s section of SiriusXM’s New York operation as “cultish,” claiming some employees appeared obsessed with earning Stern’s approval.

Another particularly striking allegation concerned the atmosphere inside Stern’s workplace.

“You go into that compound, and it’s just pictures of Howard everywhere,” the source claimed. Staffers would also reportedly greet one another with Stern’s trademark “Hey now” catchphrase. The insider acknowledged that some of this could appear playful from the inside but argued that the atmosphere looked considerably stranger after gaining some distance from it.

Radio personality Anthony Cumia of Compound Censored (and formerly of The Opie and Anthony Show) shared these reports with his own firsthand account of working on the same floor as The Stern Show.

“I worked at Sirius/XM for 10 years,” Cumia said on X. “Same floor as Howard. Same morning show day part. Saw everyone else involved in his show over the course of the years. I never saw Howard. Not once. Not in the entire decade I worked there.”

A second source similarly told The U.S. Sun that the operation could feel like a cult, “especially if you’re on the outside looking in.”

These remain allegations from anonymous sources rather than independently established facts, and Stern has previously disputed the idea that employees were prohibited from approaching him. Page Six reported that it contacted Stern’s representatives regarding the latest claims but had not received a response at the time of publication.

‘Opie’ Previously Claimed SiriusXM Locked Down the Hallway for Stern

The latest allegations also bear a striking resemblance to claims made years earlier by former SiriusXM personality Gregg “Opie” Hughes.

In a 2018 retrospective on Hughes’ final years at SiriusXM, former SiriusXM employee Matt Sager described what he called the “Lockdown.” According to Sager, Hughes and members of his staff would arrive for work only to be stopped by security and prevented from entering until Howard Stern and his security detail had passed through the building.

Sager wrote that the extraordinary arrangement was allegedly instituted after Hughes encountered Stern in the hallway and said, “Good morning.”

“Opie was forbidden to enter his own workplace when Stern was on the premises,” Sager wrote, describing the restriction as retaliation for Hughes greeting Stern as the two passed one another.

Video circulated online showing Hughes apparently waiting behind security before Stern and his entourage passed through the hallway. Once allowed through, Hughes could be heard loudly shouting “GOOD MORNING!” in Stern’s direction.

The significance today is difficult to miss. Years before anonymous former Stern staffers claimed employees were warned not to approach Stern at company functions, another prominent SiriusXM personality was publicly alleging that management physically cleared his path through the building and prevented other employees from entering until Stern had passed.

The Howard Stern Show Has Been Gutted by Layoffs

The allegations are emerging as Stern’s operation undergoes an enormous contraction.

The U.S. Sun reports that approximately 40 employees were dismissed in February, followed by another 16 employees in July. The outlet reports that the second round included five on-air personalities. One of these was reportedly longtime Sten Show writer and on-air personality Benjy Bronk, who had been with the show for 26 years.

Page Six previously reported the July layoffs as roughly a dozen staffers, with employees receiving the news during a Zoom call.

More importantly, the cuts appear to reflect a fundamental change in Stern’s workload.

Stern reportedly intends to produce only one new show per week following his summer break, with programming from his enormous archive filling additional airtime. A source previously explained the cuts by saying Stern simply did not need the same amount of new content anymore.

That’s a staggering reduction for a program that once defined SiriusXM and helped transform Stern into arguably the biggest personality in satellite radio.

Stern signed a new three-year agreement with SiriusXM in December 2025, saying the arrangement would provide greater “flexibility.” That flexibility now appears to include dramatically less original programming and a significantly smaller workforce.

Former Employees Have Reportedly Fought Over Severance

The layoffs haven’t necessarily resulted in clean departures either.

According to The U.S. Sun’s reporting, former employees have pushed back against severance packages and confidentiality restrictions attached to their exits. The outlet reports that some employees initially received offers amounting to approximately one week of salary for each year worked, while some attempted to negotiate improved terms.

That becomes considerably more interesting in light of the allegations now emerging about the culture inside Stern’s operation.

Former employees willing and legally able to speak publicly could potentially provide substantially more information about how The Howard Stern Show operated behind the scenes.

And Stern already has another former employee making allegations about his workplace in court.

Stern’s Radio Empire Is Getting Much Smaller

Whatever ultimately comes of the allegations, the larger story surrounding Howard Stern is increasingly one of contraction.

The radio personality who once built his reputation around being willing to say practically anything is now overseeing a show where former employees claim they were warned against saying anything to him at a company party.

At the same time, dozens of jobs have reportedly disappeared, his production schedule is being reduced to a fraction of what it once was, and former employees have reportedly disputed their severance arrangements.

None of that proves the more sensational description of Stern’s operation as “cultish.”

But when multiple former employees describe a workplace centered around keeping the boss isolated while workers compete for his approval — and claim that simply approaching that boss at a company party could jeopardize someone’s employment — it raises serious questions about what was happening behind the microphone at The Howard Stern Show.

And with considerably more former Stern employees suddenly finding themselves outside the organization, we may soon be hearing much more about it.
