Disney is officially ending the Play Disney Parks app after more than eight years of encouraging guests to turn time in line into playtime.
The free app will be discontinued on September 16, 2026, according to details reported by Scott Gustin. On that date, Disney will remove it from digital storefronts and prevent existing users from logging into their accounts.

Guests who want to review their achievements or saved progress should do so before the shutdown. Disney has not announced a replacement for the app or publicly explained why it is being retired.
What Was the Play Disney Parks App?
Launched in June 2018, Play Disney Parks offered location-based games, trivia challenges, music, digital achievements, and interactive experiences at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.
Disney initially promoted the app as a way to make lengthy attraction waits more entertaining. Guests could access themed games while standing in line for rides such as Space Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, Slinky Dog Dash, Toy Story Mania, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

The app later became a significant component of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Its Star Wars: Datapad allowed visitors to hack droids, scan cargo, translate alien languages, intercept transmissions, and complete missions throughout Black Spire Outpost.
Other experiences included the Disney Fab 50 Quest, the ACE Guide to Pandora, and DuckTales World Showcase Adventure at EPCOT. Some games interacted with physical elements inside the parks, blurring the line between a mobile game and a traditional theme park attraction.
However, Play Disney Parks never appeared to achieve widespread adoption. Guests already rely heavily on the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps to manage reservations, order food, check wait times, and purchase Lightning Lane access. Convincing them to download another app for optional games may have proven difficult.
Available download figures suggest a significant disparity between the apps. On iPhones, Play Disney Parks has reportedly accumulated around 77,000 downloads, compared with more than 3 million for My Disney Experience. The Google Play Store lists more than 1 million Android downloads for Play Disney Parks and over 10 million for My Disney Experience.

Its retirement also comes amid continuing complaints that visiting Disney’s theme parks now requires guests to spend too much time looking at their phones. Although Play Disney Parks was designed to enhance the physical environment, it gave visitors another reason to focus on a screen during an expensive vacation.
What Happens to the Games?
Most of the app’s games, trivia activities, badges, and saved achievements will become unavailable when the service ends.
The Star Wars: Datapad will be retired alongside the app. However, Disney has confirmed that Batuu Bounty Hunters will remain operational at both versions of Galaxy’s Edge. Guests will still be able to track targets using MagicBand+ and screens located throughout the land, although the app-based component will no longer function.

The future of DuckTales World Showcase Adventure is less certain. The EPCOT experience is currently unavailable, and Disney says it will share more information at a later date. Because the scavenger hunt activates physical effects throughout World Showcase, Disney could potentially preserve it on another platform.
Play Disney Parks represented an ambitious attempt to combine Disney’s physical attractions with digital entertainment. Although the app never became essential to most vacations, its disappearance will eliminate several creative experiences that gave returning guests new ways to explore the parks—and one more reason to look at their phones.
