The cause of death for country music legend Dolly Parton has now been revealed, one day after the beloved singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist died at the age of 80.

Parton died following a brief battle with cancer, according to her representatives, revealing for the first time that the entertainment icon had privately been fighting the disease.

According to PEOPLE, Parton’s representatives confirmed that she died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by members of her family.

“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer,” her representatives said, Parton “departed her Earthly life” on August 25.

The specific form of cancer Parton had has not been disclosed.

The revelation provides new context for the health struggles Parton had experienced publicly over the final year of her life, although there is currently no confirmation that all of those issues were directly connected to her cancer diagnosis.

Parton had been remarkably open about having health problems while simultaneously keeping the most serious element of her condition away from the public eye.

In October 2025, concern surrounding Parton intensified after she postponed a Las Vegas residency because doctors said she needed several medical procedures.

Parton responded to the speculation herself, telling worried fans in a video that she was not as sick as some reports suggested.

“I’m not ready to die yet,” Parton said at the time, adding that she did not believe God was finished with her and that she still had work to do.

The Associated Press reported at the time that Parton had attributed some of her health problems to neglecting her own needs while caring for her husband, Carl Dean, before his death in March 2025.

At that point, there was no public indication that Parton had cancer.

Parton Revealed Immune And Digestive Problems Months Before Her Death

Parton offered considerably more detail about her condition in May 2026.

After canceling her rescheduled Las Vegas residency, she revealed that her immune and digestive systems had become severely disrupted over the previous several years.

“My immune system and digestive system got all out of whack,” Parton explained.

According to Reuters, Parton said doctors were working to rebuild her health and that she believed she was continuing to improve.

Despite canceling the residency, Parton remained characteristically upbeat and continued discussing the numerous projects she hoped to complete.

Those health concerns came in addition to Parton’s previously disclosed problems with kidney stones.

However, none of those earlier conditions should currently be described as the cause of her death.

Her representatives have specifically identified cancer as the illness she was battling at the end of her life, while the relationship, if any, between the cancer and Parton’s earlier immune, digestive, or kidney problems remains unknown.

She Was Still Looking Toward The Future

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of the revelation is just how determined Parton remained to continue working despite what she was privately facing.

Just days before her death, Parton was still discussing future projects and her desire to keep creating.

In one of her final interviews with PEOPLE, Parton spoke about her continuing health challenges while also discussing plans for the Life of Many Colors Museum in Nashville, the SongTeller Hotel, her work at Dollywood, and other ventures.

Rather than speaking like someone preparing to retreat from public life, Parton continued looking toward what came next.

That attitude remained consistent with the way she had addressed her health throughout the previous year — with humor, faith, and an almost stubborn refusal to allow illness to define her.

Even when doctors limited her travel, Parton remained involved in her businesses and creative projects wherever possible.

The Cancer Diagnosis Changes What We Knew About Her Final Months

The confirmation of Parton’s cancer battle inevitably casts her final public appearances and statements in a different light.

Fans knew she was dealing with health issues. They knew she had undergone procedures. They knew she was canceling appearances and increasingly relying on doctors in Nashville.

What they did not know was that one of America’s most recognizable entertainers was privately facing cancer.

That appears to have been a deliberate decision.

Parton spent more than six decades sharing her music, humor, businesses, philanthropy, and larger-than-life personality with the world, but she remained fiercely protective of certain parts of her private life.

Her marriage to Carl Dean was famously kept largely outside the glare of celebrity culture, and it now appears Parton approached her final illness with much of that same privacy. There’s still much the public doesn’t know. Her representatives have not disclosed when Parton was diagnosed, what type of cancer she had, or what treatment she received.

Until the family or estate chooses to provide those details, speculation should remain exactly that.

What has now been confirmed is heartbreaking enough: Dolly Parton spent the final period of her extraordinary life quietly fighting cancer while continuing, for as long as she could, to plan for the future.

Dolly Parton Leaves Behind An Extraordinary Legacy

Parton’s death has triggered an enormous outpouring of grief from fans, entertainers, and public figures around the world.

But her legacy extends far beyond country music.

She wrote classics including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” the latter of which became one of the most recognizable songs in modern music after Whitney Houston recorded her own version.

Parton also built Dollywood into one of America’s most successful theme parks and created the Imagination Library, which has distributed hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.

The Los Angeles Times noted following her death that the Imagination Library had distributed more than 330 million books across multiple countries.

That combination of entertainment, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, faith, and an unmistakably personal connection with generations of fans made Parton something much bigger than a music star.

And perhaps the final revelation about her life is entirely consistent with the woman the public thought it knew.

Dolly Parton was facing something extraordinarily difficult. She simply chose not to make it the center of the story.
