Godzilla may have survived the events of Godzilla Minus One, but the King of the Monsters may not be the biggest threat facing Japan in the upcoming sequel.

Toho and GKIDS released a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero Tuesday, confirming that Godzilla has regenerated following his apparent destruction at the end of the previous film while dropping several tantalizing clues about what could be coming next.

The sequel takes place in 1949, two years after Godzilla Minus One, with Japan once again attempting to rebuild after surviving both World War II and Godzilla’s devastating attack.

The trailer makes clear that the monster’s return has shattered that brief period of peace.

The trailer can be watched here.

Godzilla Returns in Godzilla Minus Zero

In the first part of the trailer, the people of Japan are shown dealing with what they believe is the post-Godzilla reality. One man claims, “We didn’t finish the job like we thought.” Another recalls seeing the monster “blown to pieces.”

Yet, as movie fans know, it takes more than that to keep Godzilla down.

A plan is laid out to “fight fire with fire,” while Makoto Aoyama (Masami Nagasawa), introduced as a weather forecasting prodigy, suggests a mysterious “Plan B.”

Amid the action scenes and kaiju destruction, viewers also catch quick reminders of the human elements that helped define Godzilla Minus One.

Yet the final moments of the trailer appear to tease the arrival of one of the most famous monsters in Godzilla history.

Is King Ghidorah Coming to Godzilla Minus Zero?

The trailer concludes with Godzilla collapsing to the ground before audiences hear a distinctive roar that bears a striking resemblance to Ghidorah’s classic cry.

That alone would be enough to get longtime fans talking, but the trailer contains several other possible clues.

Kenji Noda, once again played by Hidetaka Yoshioka, reveals that humanity’s latest attempt to defeat Godzilla is called “Operation Narukami.” Narukami is associated with thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology—elements also closely associated with Ghidorah and his destructive gravity beams.

The earlier reference to “fighting fire with fire” could also suggest that humanity intends to use another monster against Godzilla.

Then there is the title itself.

Ghidorah was famously called “Monster Zero” in the 1965 film Invasion of Astro-Monster, making the decision to call the sequel Godzilla Minus Zero considerably more interesting if the three-headed monster is indeed involved.

Toho has not officially confirmed Ghidorah’s appearance, so it remains possible that director Takashi Yamazaki is deliberately playing with audience expectations. Still, the combination of the roar, the references to lightning, and the “Zero” title makes the possibility difficult to ignore.

A Major Shift for Godzilla Minus Zero

Introducing Ghidorah would represent a major shift from Godzilla Minus One, which largely treated Godzilla as an almost natural disaster intruding upon an otherwise grounded postwar Japan.

Adding another kaiju—particularly an extraterrestrial monster like Ghidorah—could push Yamazaki’s series considerably closer to the monster-versus-monster battles that eventually became a defining part of the franchise.

It could also explain the ominous language surrounding the sequel. The official synopsis promises that “a new threat strikes,” while the trailer declares, “There is no third time. Everything ends here.”

Yamazaki returns as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor following Godzilla Minus One, which became the first film in the franchise to win an Academy Award.

Godzilla Minus Zero will open in Japan on November 3 before arriving in North American theaters on November 6. It is also the first Japanese production filmed specifically for IMAX.

If the trailer is really pointing toward Ghidorah, audiences may be getting something substantially bigger than a rematch between humanity and Godzilla.
