Players in parts of the Middle East say regional copies of Marvel’s Wolverine have been altered so that Mystique’s marriage to Tyger is hard to see and, in some scenes, hard to hear. The reports began circulating days after the PlayStation 5 launch and have since been repeated across gaming sites, including coverage that collected player screenshots, a letter with the text blocked out, and a compilation clip from Reddit.
🇱🇧 🎮 Players in Lebanon have reported censorship in Marvel’s Wolverine, with some scenes and references to Mystique’s marriage to Tyger Tiger appearing altered or removed. Insomniac Games’ story treats Mystique and Tyger as wives. In versions players describe as Middle East copies, that framing does not survive intact. A framed wedding photograph can still be picked up, but the image itself is blank or fully blurred. A letter tied to the couple is likewise unreadable. Spoken lines that mention “wife” drop out while the rest of the scene’s audio keeps going. Subtitles in those moments replace the word with asterisks. One player wrote that the cuts first looked like a glitch, then repeated often enough that they no longer did. Another post aimed at Insomniac asked why Mystique’s relationship had been removed in Lebanon.
It is still not public how wide the change is. Players have used “Middle East versions” as a shorthand. One post named Lebanon. Same-sex relationships are illegal in a number of countries in the region, which is the legal backdrop news outlets have cited when explaining why a publisher might ship a different build. Sony and Insomniac have been asked for comment. As of the latest reports, neither has issued a detailed public explanation of which territories received the altered files.
The pattern is not new for this studio’s Marvel games. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was previously changed for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, including pride flags and a side quest built around a same-sex couple. The Wolverine edits look similar in method: mute a word, blank a prop, leave the surrounding scene standing so the game still runs.
That half-measure is part of why the story has spread beyond a single screenshot. A missing line in a film or TV show is a familiar regional practice. In a game, players can pause, pick up the photo, read the letter, and compare builds with friends outside the region. The contrast is easy to post. The argument that followed has been louder than the props themselves.

Alongside the censorship clips, some players have said they asked stores and digital storefronts for refunds. Those claims have been repeated in comment threads as “large numbers,” though neither Sony nor retailers have published a refund tally tied to the regional edits. What can be said from public reporting is narrower: the altered wedding photo, the blocked letter, and the silenced “wife” lines are the pieces players have shown. The refund talk is part of the same conversation, not a confirmed sales report.
Whether the changes were required by local classification boards, applied by the publisher in advance, or limited to a subset of storefronts is still unconfirmed. Until Sony or Insomniac describes the map, the record is the one players filmed: a marriage that exists in one build and is scratched out of another.
Ultimately, it needs to be said again, that the virtue signals of entertainment companies often ends the moment it costs them cash. And not a peep will they squeak in opposition to the rules against their message abroad.
