Paramount Reportedly Eyes Elon Musk as Investor as Warner Bros. Merger Nears Finish Line

If Mark Ruffalo was angry about David Ellison’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery before, the latest development probably isn’t going to make him feel any better. Paramount CEO David Ellison has reportedly considered approaching Elon Musk about becoming an equity investor in the company as Paramount prepares to complete its massive acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to a new report from Semafor, Paramount executives have discussed potentially asking Musk to participate in a syndicate of wealthy investors providing additional equity to the company.

Variety subsequently reported that Musk is one of several wealthy individuals Ellison has considered approaching as Paramount looks for additional capital.

There is an important distinction here: Musk has not agreed to invest in Paramount, and there is no indication that an agreement has been reached.

Paramount declined to comment on the report, while Musk did not respond to requests for comment. The amount Musk could potentially invest is also unknown.

Still, even the possibility is noteworthy.

The Ellison-Musk Connection

A potential Musk investment would not exactly come out of nowhere.

Larry Ellison, David Ellison’s father and the co-founder of Oracle, has a longstanding relationship with Musk. Ellison invested approximately $1 billion in Musk’s 2022 acquisition of Twitter, now X, previously invested in Tesla, and served on Tesla’s board.

Larry Ellison is also already providing enormous financial backing for his son’s Warner Bros. acquisition. Semafor reports that the elder Ellison has personally guaranteed more than $40 billion in equity financing connected to the transaction.

Bringing Musk or other wealthy investors into the equation could diversify the investors behind the combined company while reducing the extraordinary financial burden currently resting on Ellison.

And it would add another fascinating personality to what’s already one of the biggest media deals in Hollywood history.

Mark Ruffalo Won’t Love This

Then there’s Mark Ruffalo.

The Marvel actor has become one of Hollywood’s most vocal opponents of the Paramount-Warner Bros. transaction, repeatedly campaigning against the merger and targeting David and Larry Ellison personally.

Last month, Ruffalo accused the Ellisons of “powering some of the most destructive and inhuman forces in the world” while attacking Oracle’s relationship with Israel and arguing against the proposed merger.

Paramount responded forcefully, saying it was “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.” Ruffalo rejected the company’s accusation, calling it “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” and insisting that criticism of Israel, Oracle, and the Ellisons was not criticism of Jewish people.

Ruffalo didn’t stop there.

As California Attorney General Rob Bonta moved toward settling the states’ antitrust lawsuit against Paramount, Ruffalo publicly demanded that Bonta refuse to make a deal.

“Do not cave,” Ruffalo wrote last weekend, pointing to thousands of filmmakers and tens of thousands of petition signatures opposing the transaction. “You work for the people — the very people who will be hurt if you let this lousy deal filled with empty promises go forward.”

Now imagine adding Elon Musk to the mix.

Musk has become one of the most prominent and polarizing businessmen in America, and a frequent target of Ruffalo’s online rants. The prospect of him potentially owning an equity stake in the company controlling Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, CBS, DC, and numerous other entertainment properties would almost certainly attract attention.

At this point, however, that remains hypothetical. The reporting says only that Ellison has considered approaching Musk, not that Musk has accepted or that negotiations have produced an investment.

Paramount’s Massive New Hollywood Empire

The report comes as Paramount’s Warner Bros. transaction approaches its final stages following months of political, regulatory, and industry opposition.

The proposed combination has faced challenges from state attorneys general, Hollywood unions, filmmakers, and actors including Ruffalo. Critics have raised concerns ranging from potential job losses and industry consolidation to the future editorial independence of CNN.

Meanwhile, Paramount has argued that the combination would strengthen the companies and preserve a major Hollywood operation at a time when the traditional entertainment business is under enormous pressure.

The financial scale of the transaction makes the search for additional investors particularly significant.

Semafor characterized a potential Musk investment as a way to strengthen Paramount’s financial position and broaden its investor base rather than leaving such an enormous portion of the financing dependent upon Larry Ellison.

And Musk may not be the only person under consideration.

The report specifically says he’s one of multiple wealthy individuals David Ellison has considered for the investor syndicate, though the identities of the others were not disclosed.

The Musk Factor

If Musk ultimately does become involved, it would create an extraordinary collection of powerful investors around one of America’s largest media companies.

But that’s an “if.”

For now, the story isn’t that Elon Musk is buying Paramount or Warner Bros. It isn’t even that Musk has agreed to invest.

The story is that David Ellison is reportedly considering bringing Musk into the financial structure supporting Paramount as the company prepares for life after the Warner Bros. acquisition.

That alone is remarkable considering how bitter the political and cultural battle surrounding this merger has already become.

And after weeks of Mark Ruffalo campaigning against the Ellisons, demanding regulators block the transaction, and warning about billionaire control of major media institutions, the possibility of Elon Musk joining the party adds another potentially explosive wrinkle to a merger that has already produced plenty of them.
