A seven-year-old Marvel movie has now accomplished something that puts the disappointing theatrical performance of DC Studios’ Supergirl into even sharper perspective.
The 2026 theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame has officially surpassed Supergirl‘s entire worldwide box office run — and it needed less than two weeks to do it.
According to current figures, Avengers: Endgame Encore has generated approximately $126.62 million worldwide since returning to theaters on September 25. Supergirl, meanwhile, finished its worldwide theatrical run with approximately $126.47 million.
That means audiences have now spent more money returning to theaters for a movie originally released in 2019 than they spent on the entirety of DC Studios’ new Supergirl theatrical release.
Endgame Finds an Audience Seven Years Later
The comparison is particularly striking because Avengers: Endgame is hardly a movie audiences haven’t had an opportunity to see.
The culmination of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga originally arrived in theaters in April 2019 and became one of the biggest movies in Hollywood history. It has subsequently been available through digital purchases, physical media, television, and Disney+.
Nevertheless, Endgame Encore has attracted a significant theatrical audience.
The re-release currently stands at approximately $36.64 million domestically and $89.98 million internationally. Disney previously announced that the movie generated $86 million worldwide during its opening weekend alone, including $26 million domestically and $60 million internationally.

The Encore presentation includes additional material and a preview of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, providing Marvel fans with an additional incentive to revisit the movie on the big screen.
But surpassing $126 million from a re-release remains an impressive accomplishment.
Supergirl Struggled to Find an Audience
The numbers create an uncomfortable comparison for DC Studios and its co-CEO James Gunn.
Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock and directed by Craig Gillespie, reportedly carried a production budget of approximately $170 million. Yet the movie ultimately generated just $72.37 million domestically and $54.1 million internationally for its $126.47 million worldwide total.
Its international performance looks particularly weak beside Endgame Encore.

The seven-year-old Avengers movie has already earned nearly $90 million internationally from its re-release. That’s approximately $36 million more than Supergirl generated from international audiences throughout its entire theatrical run.
And Supergirl‘s worldwide gross failed to even match its reported production budget before accounting for marketing expenses or the percentage of ticket revenue retained by theaters.
TheWrap reported after the film’s opening that insiders believed Supergirl needed approximately $315 million worldwide to break even and projected an eventual loss of roughly $85 million.
It finished more than $188 million short of that reported break-even target.
Endgame Returns to the Top
The success of Endgame Encore has also accomplished something considerably larger for Marvel.
The additional revenue has pushed Avengers: Endgame‘s lifetime worldwide gross to approximately $2.92 billion, allowing the movie to once again surpass James Cameron’s Avatar for the unadjusted worldwide box office crown.
Marvel therefore managed to use a theatrical re-release to promote Avengers: Doomsday, generate another $126 million and counting from one of its biggest movies, and reclaim the worldwide box office record.

Along the way, Endgame Encore also surpassed the entire theatrical run of one of DC Studios’ major 2026 releases.
For Supergirl, that’s a comparison that makes an already disappointing theatrical performance look considerably worse.
