Glen Powell is drawing a boundary between his acting career and political debate, taking a different approach from Hollywood personalities who embrace activism.
Speaking with Esquire, Powell said political conversations have become divisive and unproductive.
“I realized that politics divide people. People trying to prove their point—for me, it’s the worst version of a conversation,” he said. “I genuinely do not like the discourse. It’s not as healthy as it once was.”

Powell expressed respect for people who fight for their beliefs but explained that political engagement does not suit him.
“If I were a political person, I would be talking about it,” he observed. “For me, my calling is elsewhere.”
His comments raise a familiar question: should becoming a successful entertainer come with an expectation to become a political spokesman?
Tatiana Maslany Calls Political Restraint “Cowardly”
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law actress Tatiana Maslany recently offered a considerably different answer.
During an appearance on Mehdi Hasan’s Zeteo podcast, Maslany criticized the approach associated with Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan.
Hasan cited Selleck’s reluctance to alienate viewers through politics and Jordan’s famous observation that Republicans also buy shoes. Jordan has described that remark as a joke.
Maslany argued that entertainment cannot be separated from politics.

“All entertainment is political,” she said, later describing their mentality as “so cowardly.”
She framed artists as having a responsibility to confront society and suggested wealthy celebrities have much to lose by taking a stand.
Powell’s position offers a clear contrast, although his remarks were not presented as a response to Maslany.
Her argument treats political engagement as part of an artist’s responsibility. Powell leaves room for entertainers to decide whether public advocacy belongs within their own calling.
Mark Ruffalo Brings Hulk Into the Political Fight
Mark Ruffalo recently illustrated how closely an actor can connect his screen identity with partisan activism.
As That Park Place reported, Ruffalo spoke against President Donald Trump and Republicans during a recent “Hands Off Our Vote” event in New York City.
After someone in the crowd invoked Hulk, Ruffalo embraced the reference.

“I’m gonna Hulk out,” he said, adding, “You won’t like me when I’m angry.”
He also emphasized that he continues to play the Marvel character.
Ruffalo was speaking at a political event, where attendees would reasonably expect political remarks. By embracing the Hulk references, however, he brought a character enjoyed by a broad audience into a partisan setting.
His views should not automatically be treated as Disney’s or Marvel’s position. Even so, audiences may associate the familiar character with the political message delivered by the actor who portrays him.
That creates a potential complication for entertainment companies trying to sell the same movie to people with sharply different political beliefs.
Audiences Can Decide What They Want From Their Stars
These comments highlight competing ideas about celebrity and responsibility.
Maslany views political engagement as integral to artistic expression. Ruffalo willingly incorporates his most recognizable role into activism. Powell prefers to keep his public career outside that fight.

Celebrities have every right to speak out. They also have the right to avoid discourse they believe is unhealthy for society or damaging to their careers.
Moviegoers bring different beliefs into the same theater. Creating an experience they can enjoy together remains a worthwhile ambition, even when they disagree about nearly everything outside it.
Powell’s decision may disappoint people who want every prominent actor to take a public stand. Others may appreciate a star who lets his work remain the main attraction, without another political argument attached.
