Production on The Batman Part II is moving forward under an unexpected new director, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh stepping in to complete principal photography while Matt Reeves continues dealing with a family matter.

The surprising development, first reported by Deadline, comes after production on the long-awaited sequel was temporarily suspended earlier this month. Although Soderbergh will direct the remaining scenes, Reeves and DC Studios insist that the filmmaker remains firmly in charge of the project.

Steven Soderbergh Takes Over Filming

According to Deadline, Soderbergh personally approached Reeves about helping finish the movie rather than waiting for the director to return to the set.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios subsequently confirmed the arrangement, explaining that Soderbergh would complete the final weeks of principal photography while working closely with Reeves to preserve his creative vision.

Soderbergh, whose extensive filmography includes Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic, and Erin Brockovich, praised Reeves’ work on the original film.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh explained in a statement.

He added that his objective was to produce footage that would integrate seamlessly with what Reeves had already filmed, allowing the original director to complete the movie.

Approximately two-thirds of the sequel’s principal photography has reportedly been completed.

Matt Reeves and James Gunn Address the Situation

Reeves quickly responded to speculation that he was being replaced permanently.

“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” Reeves wrote on X. “I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn similarly emphasized that Reeves remains the project’s director.

“Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be,” Gunn stated on Threads.

Gunn also expressed his gratitude to Soderbergh for offering to help complete Reeves’ vision. The arrangement is unusual for a major Hollywood production, particularly one involving a filmmaker whose visual style is so closely associated with the franchise.

Nevertheless, Soderbergh’s experience makes him a formidable choice to handle the remaining production.

Another Complication for the Long-Delayed Batman Sequel

The latest development adds another chapter to an already lengthy production history.

Reeves’ original The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, debuted in March 2022 and earned approximately $772 million worldwide. Its sequel was initially scheduled for October 2025 before moving to October 2026, October 2027, and eventually February 18, 2028.

That means nearly six years will have passed between the two movies if the current release date holds.

Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne alongside Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The sequel remains separate from Gunn’s primary DC Universe, operating under the DC Elseworlds designation. For now, Warner Bros. has not announced another release delay, although the production interruption raises questions about whether the February 2028 date remains achievable.

Soderbergh’s involvement should allow filming to proceed without further waiting for Reeves’ return.

The larger challenge will be ensuring that the completed movie maintains the distinctive atmosphere, cinematography, and storytelling that defined the original. With an Oscar-winning filmmaker stepping in to finish another director’s blockbuster, The Batman Part II has become one of Hollywood’s most unusual productions.

We’ll find out in 2028 whether this extraordinary arrangement ultimately delivers the sequel audiences have been waiting nearly six years to see.
