Mia Goth never posted a selfie in a shirt that read “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN.” She doesn’t even have social media. That didn’t stop the fake from racing across the internet days after she filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf, and now her team is calling out Instagram for letting this Mia Goth AI image spread in the first place.
The picture went up on an Instagram account called “miagoth_,” which carried a blue verified checkmark and roughly 1 million followers. It landed two days after Goth’s divorce filing, and several outlets ran it as though it were her genuine reaction to the split. Her spokesperson, Christine Tripicchio, told The Verge the post couldn’t have been real, because Goth has no social media accounts at all.
A Blue Check on a Fake
Tripicchio said Goth’s team has filed multiple complaints with Instagram over the account’s repeated posting of “counterfeit, AI images” of the actress, and she didn’t hold back about the platform’s role.
“The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level,” Tripicchio said. “Beyond that, it is incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure’s likeness.”
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, said the account was “removed for impersonating a public figure.” The profile has since come down, according to Variety.

The account was labeled as a fan page, but the checkmark and the follower count made it easy to mistake for the real thing. Meta doesn’t ban AI-generated depictions of real people. It labels content that’s been modified with AI and flags profiles it identifies as AI-generated, and none of that kept the Mia Goth AI image from being treated as news.
The Divorce That Made the Fake Believable
Goth filed for divorce from LaBeouf in Los Angeles County Superior Court on October 6, 2026, citing irreconcilable differences and listing their date of separation as July 28, 2025. She’s asking for primary legal and physical custody of their 4-year-old daughter, Isabel, with visitation for LaBeouf, and she asked the court to rule out spousal support for both of them.
The two met on a film set in 2012 and married in 2016. They said they were splitting up in 2018 but stayed legally married, reunited in 2020, and welcomed Isabel in 2022.
Hollywood’s Growing Deepfake Problem
Goth is one of the most recognizable faces in modern horror, thanks to Ti West’s X and Pearl, along with Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

She’s far from alone. Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett, and Steven Soderbergh have all spoken out against deepfakes, and Blanchett cofounded the nonprofit Human Consent Foundation to help people register whether AI models can scrape their likenesses.
The fake picked up nearly 500,000 likes within days, and Google’s AI search overview described it as Goth taking “a clear swipe at her ex, Shia LaBeouf,” according to a follow-up report from The Verge.
