Bungie could become the next studio to tackle Star Wars Battlefront, according to a rumor naming the Halo creator as a potential developer.
Lucasfilm is reportedly seeking a partner for another installment, with DICE also under consideration. However, the report stops short of establishing that Battlefront 3 has entered development or that either studio has accepted the job.
For fans hoping to return to the series, the possibility offers some encouragement. Bungie’s involvement would also represent a significant change from the developer behind EA’s previous two entries.
Lucasfilm Reportedly Looking for a Battlefront Developer
According to The Game Post, the rumor originated in Electronic Gaming Monthly’s revived Quartermann column. Jeff Grubb subsequently discussed the claims during Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings.
The magazine reportedly links Lucasfilm’s interest in a follow-up to the continued popularity of 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II.
Released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Battlefront II combines multiplayer shooting with playable heroes, vehicles, and starfighter combat. Its battles span all three film trilogies, with modes supporting up to 40 players, alongside a single-player campaign.
That variety helps explain its lasting appeal: players can fight as ordinary soldiers, pilot iconic spacecraft, or take control of familiar characters. Cooperative missions and smaller hero battles offer additional ways to experience the galaxy, giving fans reasons to return beyond its largest multiplayer clashes.

Its account identifies DICE and Bungie as possible development partners, while indicating that nobody has fully committed.
“…if the Force is not entrusted to DICE, it could land at none other than Halo, Destiny, and Marathon developer Bungie,” the passage states.
Notably, the two candidates would bring different histories to the project. DICE developed the previous Battlefront reboot games, while Bungie established itself through franchises including Halo and Destiny.
A return to DICE would offer continuity. Choosing Bungie would instead give another established shooter developer an opportunity to interpret the series.
Brammer Suggests Respawn May Be in the Mix
Bungie isn’t the only external studio tied to the project by recent chatter. In a post on X, Joe Brammer, CEO of Wardogs developer Bulkhead Games, offered a competing account: he stated he had heard DICE and Respawn Entertainment are teaming up on Battlefront 3.
DICE and from what I’ve heard Respawn are working on Battlefront 3. Not sure what that means for Battlefield.

Respawn’s involvement would be a logical alternative. The studio has a proven track record within the franchise through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, combined with top-tier multiplayer pedigree from Titanfall and Apex Legends. A co-development arrangement between DICE and Respawn could potentially allow EA to balance resources without derailing other major franchises like Battlefield.
Bungie Already Has a Star Wars Connection
Although a full Battlefront installment would be new territory, Bungie has already incorporated Star Wars influences into its work.
The studio released Destiny 2: Renegades on December 2, 2025. In its official launch announcement, Bungie described the expansion as a Destiny 2 story inspired by Star Wars.
Its additions included blaster weapons using a heat-based ammunition system, alongside missions involving smuggling and sabotage. The campaign remained part of Destiny’s universe and ongoing narrative.

That experience provides a connection between Bungie and the franchise. However, creating themed content within an existing game differs considerably from taking responsibility for a dedicated Battlefront sequel.
Any potential project would also invite scrutiny over how closely it preserves the series’ identity. Bungie’s shooter experience could offer possibilities, but its name alone would reveal little about the eventual design.
Battlefront 3 Remains Unconfirmed
On Game Mess Mornings, Grubb clarified that the report hints at exploratory publisher talks rather than active coding or pre-production. While acknowledging the Bungie mention, Grubb emphasized his personal hunch: that Lucasfilm will ultimately stick with DICE.

For now, the developer search is the central claim. Treating either candidate as selected would go beyond what has been reported.
A new Battlefront could give players another opportunity to experience the franchise’s battles through a modern multiplayer shooter. Before expectations move toward gameplay, platforms, or a release date, however, Lucasfilm first needs a studio willing to make it.
