The Marvels could reunite in Avengers: Secret Wars, bringing back the superhero trio whose last team-up became a disastrous box-office failure.

A new rumor suggests that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel will see their unfinished storyline resolved. Their potential return follows a film that earned just $206.1 million worldwide and reportedly lost Disney approximately $237 million.

The actresses have offered varying assessments of their futures in the franchise. Larson questioned whether audiences wanted her back, Vellani received assurances about returning, and Parris appeared uncertain about Monica’s next appearance.

Rumor Points to a Secret Wars Reunion

The rumor comes from Alex Perez, a Cosmic Circus contributor who covers Marvel projects and regularly discusses purported behind-the-scenes developments in reader Q&As.

In the outlet’s October 21 Q&A, featuring questions from Discord and Patreon members, Perez was asked what comes next for The Marvels.

“They’ll reunite soon. It’s one of the few storylines that’ll get a resolution come Secret Wars,” he replied.

His answer points toward a reunion for Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel after their previous film left Monica separated from her teammates. However, Perez offered no details about how they would reunite or how substantial their roles might be.

Although Perez regularly reports on upcoming Marvel productions, he did not identify a source for this particular claim. Marvel Studios has not confirmed the reunion, so his comments remain an unverified indication of where the characters’ story could go.

A Reunion After a Costly Failure

Whatever Marvel’s plans, the trio’s previous outing offers little evidence of strong theatrical demand.

According to The Numbers, The Marvels earned approximately $84.5 million domestically and $121.6 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $206.1 million.

Those disappointing returns proved especially damaging when weighed against the film’s expenses. Deadline’s annual financial analysis estimated a $237 million net loss, placing The Marvels atop its ranking of 2023’s biggest movie bombs. That calculation accounted for broader costs and revenues, rather than simply subtracting the production budget from ticket sales.

The result made the film one of the superhero genre’s most expensive failures.

An appearance in a sprawling Avengers ensemble would give Marvel another opportunity to use these characters. However, their inclusion in a crossover would hardly establish that audiences want another standalone Marvels movie.

The Actresses Have Offered Mixed Signals About Returning

Larson questioned audience enthusiasm even before The Marvels reached theaters.

Asked by Variety at the September 2022 D23 Expo how long she would play Captain Marvel, Larson responded, “I don’t know. Does anyone want me to do it again?”

Her response alluded to the contentious reception surrounding her portrayal, although she did not announce any intention to leave.

Vellani later addressed the sequel’s financial struggles. Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment in November 2023, she said its box-office performance was outside her control, adding, “That’s for Bob Iger.”

By March 2024, she indicated that Marvel still had plans for Kamala Khan. As reported at the time, Vellani told Polygon she had received assurances about returning, while acknowledging that she had few concrete details.

Asked about Monica’s future at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Parris offered a less encouraging response. Although The Marvels’ post-credits sequence appeared to position Monica for a role in Doomsday, her comments cast doubt on that possibility.

“I miss Monica as much as you guys do,” Parris said. “I wish her well, and I’m excited to see what they do next.”

Her wording suggested some distance from Marvel’s plans, though it did not establish that she was finished with the role.

If Perez’s rumor proves accurate, Secret Wars could finally resolve the trio’s unfinished business. Winning back audience interest, however, will require more than putting the same characters together again.
