Tom Cruise is getting one of Hollywood’s biggest career honors. The American Film Institute’s Board of Trustees announced that Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, according to AFI.
The award will be presented at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 24, 2027. AFI calls it the highest honor for a career in film.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees. “As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together.”
Kennedy added that Cruise’s passion “has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world.” All proceeds from the gala will support AFI’s education and arts programs, according to the institute.
Here’s a look at the career AFI is celebrating.
Cruise’s Career by the Numbers
AFI said Cruise’s films have earned nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office over a career spanning more than four decades. He’s a four-time Oscar nominee, with Best Actor nominations for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia.
His fourth nomination came as a producer of the 2022 Maverick sequel, a Best Picture nominee that became the highest-grossing film of his career, according to AFI. In 2025, he received an Honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards.
AFI’s list of his best-known films also includes Risky Business, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Minority Report, Collateral, Edge of Tomorrow, and the Mission: Impossible series.
AFI also said Cruise has spent the last 40 years producing and starring in movies built to stand the test of time. His work as a producer, especially on the Mission: Impossible films, is a big part of the career the institute is recognizing.
Recent recipients include Eddie Murphy in 2026, Francis Ford Coppola in 2025, and Nicole Kidman in 2024, according to AFI’s list of honorees.
What’s Next for Tom Cruise
Cruise is currently starring in Digger, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and he’s set to return as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2, according to AFI.
Cruise has also been honored by the Cannes Film Festival and the Producers Guild of America, and he was named a Knight of France’s Legion of Honor, according to AFI.
AFI’s list of his past honors also includes Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Man of the Year Award, the Simon Wiesenthal Humanitarian Award, the Friars Club’s Entertainment Icon Award, and the John Huston Award from the Artists Rights Foundation.
