Red Baron Pizza is standing behind an employee whose confrontation with social media pranksters went viral, offering a public show of support as viewers donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to help his family.

The Michigan worker, identified on his fundraiser as Walt Z, attracted widespread sympathy after a video showed a prankster pretending to steal money from his phone while he was stocking frozen pizzas.

The brand made its position clear in an October 29 post on X: “He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us.”

The company’s response addresses one of the concerns behind the fundraising effort: whether an unwanted encounter filmed for social media could jeopardize Walt’s employment.

In a statement to the New York Post, a spokesperson for Red Baron’s parent company, Schwan’s Company, confirmed that the encounter happened months before its recent viral spread.

“We are aware of the video circulating on social media involving one of our Direct Store Delivery employees during an incident that occurred in August,” the spokesperson said.

The Minnesota-based frozen-food manufacturer and distributor also confirmed that it had contacted Walt and continued to support him.

“Following the incident, we connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our support. We are pleased to share that he is doing well and remains a valued member of our team,” the spokesperson added.

Together, that statement and Red Baron’s subsequent social media post offer reassurance to viewers concerned that Walt might lose his job over his reaction.

A Prank Strikes A Nerve

As detailed in The Detroit News’ account of the video, the encounter begins with someone asking Walt for the time while he stocks a grocery store freezer. When he checks his phone, the prankster plays a sound resembling an Apple Pay transaction and claims to have taken $10.

Walt initially walks away, saying he will report what happened. A later exchange near a checkout counter shows his frustration escalating as he describes difficulty paying his mortgage, supporting four children, and getting home late after a demanding workday.

He also explains that his children have already gone to bed and that another early start awaits him the following morning.

According to The Detroit News, the account associated with the footage, @thea.ctiveworld, also known as ThreeOfAKind, has since been deleted.

The premise depended on making a working person believe he had lost money. Walt’s reaction exposed what that setup ignored: even a supposedly small amount can carry considerable weight for someone already under pressure.

Calling an encounter a prank does not make the person on the receiving end responsible for finding it funny.

Fundraiser Passes $572,000

Luke Oakenshield launched the “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker” GoFundMe on October 27. The campaign names Walt Z as its beneficiary.

Its description says the effort was intended to give Walt financial breathing room and help protect his family’s stability amid concerns about possible consequences at work.

As of October 30, the fundraising page displayed $572,988 raised toward a $700,000 goal, with approximately 15,600 donations. The total remains subject to change.

In an update thanking supporters, Walt emphasized how much the response had meant to his family.

“My family and I are doing well, and I’m grateful to have supportive people around me. I’ve been keeping things private to protect my family’s privacy, and I appreciate everyone respecting that.”

He also addressed the interview requests he had received, explaining that public attention was not something he would ordinarily seek.

“Before making that decision, I want to make sure it’s with people who will treat me and my family with care and respect our privacy.”

Walt closed by reassuring supporters that their kindness had reached him, even if he had not responded individually.

“Please know that even if I haven’t responded to your message or comment, your support has made a difference. From me and my family, thank you.”

What began as an attempt to turn an employee’s distress into entertainment has instead brought him public support, financial assistance, and reassurance from the brand he represents. His request for privacy deserves the same respect that viewers felt was missing from the original encounter.
