EA prioritized an unannounced Star Wars Battlefront 3 over continuing BioWare’s next Mass Effect, according to Bloomberg reporting that’s now ricocheting through the fan campaign to save the RPG series.
In Madrid, “Save Mass Effect” graffiti showed up outside an EA office days after the publisher closed BioWare, turning a debt-and-portfolio story into street-level anger.
Someone has spray-painted SaveMassEffect outside EA’s offices in Madrid. The campaign has already gathered nearly 300,000 signatures, but fans say vandalism won’t help save the franchise “Petty vandalism and an online petition aren’t going to save sh*t,” https://t.co/VSRorEgnNL

IGN covered the Madrid tags after Reddit photos circulated, and pointed back to Bloomberg’s account that EA shelved Mass Effect plans to put weight behind Battlefront 3. A Pirat_Nation post summarizing that Bloomberg investigation laid out the core trade: two sci-fi projects each expected to cost hundreds of millions, an $18 billion debt load after EA’s buyout, and a bet that Star Wars multiplayer was the safer cash-flow play even though Battlefront 3 had not started development.
Battlefront 3 Won the Portfolio Fight
Bloomberg’s sources describe executives staring at two expensive sci-fi lanes and choosing the Star Wars shooter. EA has always been more comfortable funding predictable multiplayer cycles than open-ended RPG productions. Battlefront 3 fits that mold. Mass Effect: Universe, while still in early development, did not. Closing BioWare followed that choice, not the other way around.

The insult baked into the report is timing. Mass Effect work was already underway with a small BioWare team. Battlefront 3 was still a starting-line concept tied to broader plans to pair Respawn and DICE on future shooters. Fans heard that as EA retiring a narrative franchise to fund a multiplayer Disney IP that wasn’t even in production yet.

Graffiti, Billboards, and a 290,000-Signature Petition
The #SaveMassEffect campaign moved from hashtags to a petition that has generated over 290,000 signatures, then to a Times Square billboard run by We Are Mass Effect, with more boards planned around The Game Awards. The Madrid graffiti has split some supporters over whether tagging an office helps the cause or hands EA an easy dismissal.

Composer-side voices and campaign organizers have called the speed of the movement striking while still distancing themselves from vandalism. That tension is the point. A petition is polite pressure. Paint on a corporate entrance is a different temperature. EA has not publicly reversed course because of either.
What the Debt Frame Explains
After the leveraged buyout, EA needs annual predictability to service debt. A Battlefront sequel that hits dates is easier to model than a Mass Effect game that can slip. Bloomberg’s reporting also nods at weaker BioWare sales over the last decade and internal politics. Star Wars was still the headline reason sources gave for which sci-fi project survived.

For players, the map is ugly and clear. BioWare is closed. Mass Effect’s next chapter is on ice. Battlefront 3 is the investment EA wants to make. Graffiti in Madrid will not refinance $18 billion, but it shows how fast the Save Mass Effect campaign left social feeds and hit physical walls. IGN has the photos. Bloomberg has the portfolio math. But EA still has the final decision.
