Lightyear Dropped From 1,000+ Theaters… Nearly Pushed Out this Weekend

This didn’t reach infinity and it won’t go beyond. Buzz Lightyear is reaching its end in theaters as the market pushes it out the door.

After only four weekends of release, Buzz Lightyear is being shown the door by theaters around the United States. The-Numbers reports that Lightyear was dropped by more than 1,700 theater screens in its fourth weekend, but that number may not be the last big drop for the failed cinematic release by Pixar. Having dropped precipitously in terms of interest from consumers, Lightyear is pulling miniscule numbers for its showings even with those availabilities being severely reduced. As a result, Lightyear is potentially in danger of dropping to less than 1,000 total screens in the entire United States in only its fifth weekend. As other writers have speculated on this website, the question now becomes how long Disney will allow this movie to sit in the public marketplace and be an embarrassment. At this point, some are beginning to wonder if Bob Chapek is doing it on purpose to drive the point home for his various studios.

Lightyear has, thus far, only managed to make $204,703,294 at the worldwide box office. That is about one-fifth of what analysts had predicted earlier in the summer. The movie is likewise on track to lose more than one-hundred million dollars for The Walt Disney Company as it continues to have streaks of days in which it fails to even garner one-million dollars.

As a result of the film’s failure, it’s becoming the butt of jokes and memes online:

Even if Disney were to leave the movie out in the wild for an extended period of time, it’s hard to see how this movie will go beyond $225 million. It’s also hard to believe that it will perform well on Disney+ after such a marketplace shaming. With Strange World being Disney’s next attempt at an animated feature film that tackles some of the same issues as Lightyear, it may not be the last such difficulty the Mouse faces in cinemas. Better luck next time, Mick.
