Thor Faces Potential Steep Drop in Second Weekend

A potential drop for Thor’s second weekend, while facing little competition, has Disney executives concerned that Kevin Feige has lost his mojo.

It isn’t looking good for Mighty Thor or Thor or Pretty Cool Thor… or any other versions of Thor that might be out there. The second weekend is coming and box office experts are now looking at reservations with a wary eye. Many are thinking Thor could be facing a 62-65% drop in its sophomore three-day. If that comes to pass, that’s a pattern Marvel isn’t enjoying with Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also have a poor hold at the box office after a boffo opening. Thor 4 doesn’t have as big an opening to buoy its numbers.

From The Wrap:

That said, “Love and Thunder” isn’t looking like it will have a particularly strong hold at the box office. After grossing $13.6 million on Tuesday for a running $170 million domestic total, “Thor 4” is estimated for a $50-55 million second weekend, which would be a drop of 62-65% from its $144 million opening. (Wednesday figures weren’t available at the time of publishing.)

Though our friend at Forbes is talking about how fast Thor has reached $400 million in total worldwide revenues, we’re looking at this a bit more pessimistically. If Thor needs $700-800 million to break even, this is starting to look like a hard road to travel. The experts at Midnight’s Edge seem to agree.

Now the question becomes whether or not Kevin Feige has lost his zing. Sony’s Spider-Man No Way Home had phenomenal legs at the box office. Why does every Disney-produced Marvel movie since the pandemic suddenly have the opposite problem? Is the interest, outside of Marvel diehards, beginning to wain?
