A leak to Deadline from SDCC may confirm the X-Men are coming to the MCU soon… but they may be changing their name to “the mutants.”
“I don’t know where the future is going. It’s funny that people call it the X-Men, there’s a lot of female superheroes in that X-Men group, so I think it’s outdated.”
— Victoria Alonso, President of Physical, Post Production, VFX and Animation at Marvel Studios in 2019
If Bob Chapek and his acolytes are wanting to change directions for The Walt Disney Company, they’d better get a move on. Not a single Marvel movie produced by Disney has made a significant profit since 2019… and most have flopped at the box office. Still, that’s not stopping Kevin Feige and his Marvel cohorts from pushing ahead with their Phase Four strategies that have landed them in this spot. The latest head-scratcher is from a leak out of Deadline. According to the trade publication, Disney may be preparing to swap out the famously well-known title “X-Men” for a new title: “The Mutants.” If this branding-change is to be believed, it would be one heck of a notoriety down-shift.
According to a recent report from Deadline outlining what fans can expect from the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, Deadline mentions a handful of films that Marvel Studios is working on, including Fantastic Four, Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, and a film they call The Mutants.
Currently, it’s unknown exactly whether this film will feature the iconic mutant group the X-Men, or perhaps just introduce the idea and concept of mutants in the world of the MCU.

If the name change is true, and if it replaces The X-Men, it would fulfill a statement from Victoria Alonso all the way back from 2019. After all, The Mutants is a gender-inclusive term. We can’t just have masculine plural nouns acting as a gender neutral catch-all like it’s 1992 now can we?
Then again, talk about a downgrade in terms of cool factor.
