I have no idea why the MagicBand+ has been made into any sort of “big deal” either by Disney or their vloggers. Trust me, it isn’t.
MagicBands have been around for years. They work fine. I mean, they’re not something I would view as any sort of game changer. It’s a wrist object, like a watch, that you can touch to a surface and have a digital interaction. Your credit and debit card likely does the same thing. You just tap the card to a surface and make a payment. It’s the same thing with MagicBands except they get you into parks, can be used for a Lightning Lane, etc. Of course, so can your Disney ticket cards. The only real advantage here is that you don’t have to reach into your pocket for your ticket… you just stick out your wrist. If you have a child, I suppose it’s somewhat easier because you’re less likely to lose their ticket and they can just touch their wrist to something.
I mean really, this was always just a minor utility thing.
So color me skeptical when I found out that the MagicBand+ is just the exact same thing but with a few led lights behind the face of it. And sure enough, it is just as hokey as one might imagine that would be. Unless you want to watch your wrist change colors like a Lite Brite on blink mode, I just don’t understand at all what this is for. Who in the world is going to watch their wrist instead of the fireworks because their MagicBand+ is flashing a few different colors in a loosely synchronized way? Is a typical person really going to want to go interact with little golden statues around the parks using their MagicBand+ instead of, let’s say, getting in line for an amazing attraction?
I just don’t get it at all.
But as you can see, some people just love it… I guess:
As for me and what I would recommend though… you probably already know what I’m going to say. I can’t see any way in the world this is worth a dime over the normal MagicBand or just using your smartphone app. If you want to see a breakdown of all the difference (there are almost none whatsoever), check it out here.
Let’s give it up for Disney marketing though. Somehow they’re going to manage to get people to buy these in mass and make a fortune off of a few blinking leds. The MagicBand+ might not be impressive, but Disney’s money-making skills just might be.
