Rumor: Disney Skyliner Gondola System to Change Grouping Policy Soon

As Disney World returns more and more to normal, there are a few comforts that may go away — if it’s for a good cause is up for you to decide.

A WDW Magic forum user with a long track record, disneyfireman, is reporting that Disney World’s Skyliner gondola transportation system will be changing policies soon. Whereas during the pandemic it was allowed for guests to only ride with their immediate group in a single car, or even ride alone if they so chose, that preferential treatment will be phased out. Instead, the Skyliner will reportedly go back to the original policy which is that guests can ride however they prefer when there is no wait… but when there are significant lines, cars need to be appropriately full. Disney may be deciding that moving lines are more important than socially distanced gondolas.

The change is reported to occur on August 15th. That’s a very interesting date because it’s likely to be one of the least-crowded days on the calendar. Therefore, making this policy change is unlikely to result in any practical effects on the day of change, as well as for weeks to come. August 15th is a Monday and the return to school for many children. The parks will likely be about as empty as they can be. That crowd-level may continue to be very low all the way through until Labor Day. And with international travel slowing down again, Disney World is becoming quite sparse.

There are positives and negatives to the policy change for the gondolas, should it go through. Very positive is that lines will speed way up and be much smaller if cast members can fill the vehicles again. The negative is that during peak times, you may have to share your ride with another small group.
