Hollywood critics are already showering Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey with overwhelming praise, but the glowing early reactions arrive amid a much larger conversation about the growing divide between access media enthusiasm and audience skepticism.

Following early screenings of Nolan’s three-hour adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic, critics and entertainment journalists have flooded social media with near-universal acclaim.

The Guardian compiled several reactions describing the film as “an absolute triumph,” “breathtaking,” and a “colossal achievement of scale.”

Erik Davis praised the film as “a crowning cinematic achievement,” while others highlighted the performances of Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Robert Pattinson as Antinous. Multiple early reactions have already positioned the movie as a major awards contender before general audiences have had the opportunity to see it.

However, the wave of praise comes after Nolan and Universal reportedly made a significant change from the modern blockbuster marketing playbook by moving away from broad early influencer screenings and prioritizing traditional critics and journalists instead.

The Odyssey Critics Praise Arrives As Fans Question Hollywood’s Growing Divide

The enthusiastic response from critics has renewed a familiar debate among moviegoers: just how aligned are Hollywood critics and everyday audiences?

In recent years, several major franchises have seen large gaps between professional reviews and audience reactions. Films and television projects embraced by critics have not always translated into the same enthusiasm from general viewers, especially when long-running franchises or beloved source material are involved.

That tension is already surrounding The Odyssey.

While Christopher Nolan remains one of Hollywood’s most respected filmmakers following the massive success of Oppenheimer, his adaptation of Homer’s work has been surrounded by controversy for months.

The Odyssey Has Faced Backlash Over Casting, Dialogue, and Creative Choices

One of the biggest controversies surrounding The Odyssey has been the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Zendaya as Athena, with some viewers accusing the film of ignoring the Greek origins of Homer’s story.

The backlash intensified after some fans criticized the lack of Greek representation in a movie adapting one of the foundational works of Greek literature.

Other creative choices have also sparked debate, including the decision to use modern-sounding dialogue and accents rather than the more traditional style audiences often associate with historical epics.

Viewers mocked lines from promotional footage featuring phrases like “dad” and “daddy,” arguing that the dialogue felt out of place in a mythological Greek setting.

Meanwhile, others defended Nolan’s approach, arguing that every translation of Homer requires modernization and that ancient Greek would never perfectly translate to modern cinematic expectations.

Lupita Nyong’o Comments Add Fuel To The Fire

The cast’s comments about adapting Homer have also drawn attention.

Nyong’o previously discussed how Nolan’s film expands the focus on women compared to the original epic.

“When you read The Iliad and The Odyssey, very little time is spent in the perspective of women,” Nyong’o said, adding that Nolan’s adaptation takes more time to consider events from a female perspective.

Critics of those comments argued that Homer’s work already features some of mythology’s most memorable women, including Penelope, Athena, Circe, and Calypso, and accused Hollywood of attempting to “fix” a classic story rather than celebrate it.

The Odyssey Trailer Faces Massive Audience Pushback Online

Perhaps the clearest sign of the divide between early critical praise and online audience sentiment has come from the film’s trailer reception.

While critics are already calling The Odyssey one of Nolan’s greatest achievements, the latest trailer has been heavily ratioed on YouTube.

According to publicly available dislike tracking extensions, the trailer has reached approximately 668,000 dislikes compared to only 72,000 likes, suggesting a massive disconnect between the current online conversation and the early access media reaction.

While YouTube dislikes are not always a reliable predictor of box office performance, they have become a notable warning sign in recent years when passionate fanbases believe studios are mishandling beloved properties.

Will Audiences Agree With Critics?

None of this means The Odyssey is destined to fail.

Christopher Nolan remains one of the few directors in Hollywood capable of selling a movie largely on his name alone, and Oppenheimer proved audiences will still show up for ambitious, director-driven films.

But the question surrounding The Odyssey is no longer whether critics love it.

They clearly do.

The real question is whether general audiences will embrace Nolan’s interpretation of Homer’s epic, or whether The Odyssey becomes another example of the widening gap between Hollywood’s access media and the viewers who ultimately decide a film’s success.
