Ariana Grande Insists Career Break Was Planned Long Before Recent Controversies

Ariana Grande is attempting to set the record straight after reports that she plans to step away from the public eye following the conclusion of her Eternal Sunshine world tour sparked widespread speculation online.

During the first of three performances at Chicago’s United Center on Monday night, Grande addressed the situation directly from the stage, insisting that her upcoming hiatus was not a reaction to recent criticism or negative headlines but a carefully considered decision she made long ago.

The comments came just one day after a representative confirmed that the singer would be stepping back from public-facing work after the tour concludes in early September, citing the “endless, ongoing public scrutiny” that has surrounded Grande in recent months.

The announcement also coincided with news that Grande had withdrawn from Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George revival in London’s West End, fueling speculation that the two developments were connected. Grande, however, insists the decision to take a break was made long before the recent wave of headlines.

Grande Says The Break Was Planned

Speaking to fans during the concert, Grande emphasized that the decision had been in the works for some time.

“Sometimes when a story comes out that’s not directly from me, things can get a little blown out of proportion,” she said. “So I just wanted to speak to my fans directly tonight because I love you so much. The announcement that was made yesterday was not a reactive or impulsive thing.”

She continued: “It is something that I had decided to plan that I had quietly made a long time ago and it’s a decision that was made from a thoughtful and empowered place.”

Grande also pushed back against suggestions that online criticism had overshadowed what she describes as one of the happiest periods of her career.

“I heard that my fans were worried that negativity was ruining things for me, but I just have to say that could not be more the opposite.”

According to the singer, taking time away from the spotlight and loving her current career moment are not mutually exclusive.

“Yes, boundaries, they need to be set. Human beings can need a break sometimes. And also, this can be and will continue to be the greatest experience of my professional and creative life.”

Why Fans Are Questioning the Timing

Despite Grande’s insistence that her hiatus was planned well in advance, the timing of the announcement has inevitably fueled skepticism.

Just one day before addressing fans in Chicago, a representative confirmed that the singer would be stepping away from public-facing work after her Eternal Sunshine tour concludes citing “ongoing public scrutiny.” At the same time, it was revealed that Grande had also withdrawn from Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George revival in London’s West End.

The two announcements arriving together led many fans to assume they were connected.

While Grande says the decision to take a break was made “a long time ago,” her exit from the high-profile stage production raises an obvious question: if an extended hiatus had already been planned, why commit to another major acting role in the first place?

Grande has not addressed that specific point publicly, and there could be any number of explanations, including scheduling conflicts, changing priorities, or simply deciding that she needed a more complete break than originally anticipated.

For now, however, the overlap between announcing a career hiatus and withdrawing from one of the most anticipated theater productions of the coming year is likely to keep speculation alive, even as Grande insists the decision had nothing to do with the recent scrutiny surrounding her appearance or public image.

A Difficult Stretch In The Public Eye

While Grande insists her decision predates recent events, it comes after one of the most scrutinized periods of her career.

Over the past several years, Grande has repeatedly found herself at the center of online discussion—not just for her music, but for her increasingly frail appearance, dramatic weight loss, political commentary, and several awkward public moments during the Wicked promotional campaign alongside Cynthia Erivo.

The pair’s emotional interviews, tearful exchanges, and sometimes bizarre interactions became frequent subjects of memes and criticism across social media, with many viewers questioning whether the promotional tour had become unintentionally distracting.

More recently, Grande released her new album Petal, accompanied by a music video that once again reignited debate over her appearance and overall health. While fans have continued to defend the singer, the conversation surrounding her physical transformation has remained persistent despite repeated calls for privacy.

Grande, however, suggested she has learned to separate public opinion from her own reality.

“No matter what noises exist out there, nothing will ever be able to distort my reality or be more real to me than this love that we share.”

She added: “The rest of that… is not mine to carry, so I don’t carry it.”

Tour Nears Its End

Grande’s Eternal Sunshine tour concludes September 1 at London’s O2 Arena. Following that performance, she is expected to largely step away from public appearances for an extended period.

Her representative previously said the singer intends to finish the tour “healthily and happily” before taking what was described as a “much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances.”

Whether the hiatus lasts months or years remains unknown.

For now, Grande appears determined to ensure fans understand one thing above all else: despite months of speculation surrounding her health, appearance, and increasingly unconventional public image, she says this break is not the result of recent controversies, but a personal decision she made well before they dominated headlines.

Whether or not people believe that is another matter altogether.
