Asmongold Invites Embattled Blizzard Employee to Join Olympus Guild

Asmongold has extended an invitation to embattled Blizzard producer Tom Ellis to join his rapidly growing Olympus guild in World of Warcraft: Forever.

The offer came after Ellis found himself at the center of a controversy surrounding Blizzard’s crackdown on inappropriate character names during the WoW: Forever beta.

Blizzard recently confirmed that it forced name changes on some characters while removing players responsible for what it described as more extreme violations from the beta entirely. Ellis subsequently defended the decision, revealing that Blizzard employees manually reviewed the names before telling affected players, “I read the list. No sympathy. Be a better human next time.”

That statement quickly came back to haunt him.

Internet sleuths began digging through Ellis’s own social media history, circulating screenshots that purportedly showed the Blizzard veteran using offensive usernames and making inappropriate jokes years earlier. The backlash eventually became severe enough that Ellis deleted his X account.

Now, Asmongold has offered him a new home.

Asmongold Welcomes Ellis to Olympus

In a video shared on X by former Blizzard developer Mark Kern, better known online as Grummz, Asmongold called Ellis “one of our brethren who was undercover at Blizzard.”

“He was a CHUD hiding in plain sight,” Asmongold added.

Pointing to the old posts circulating online, Asmongold suggested that Ellis had merely been pretending to embrace the corporate culture that ultimately put him at odds with WoW players.

In other words, Asmongold’s argument was that Ellis was “fake woke.”

“Tom, your application to Olympus has been accepted,” Asmongold declared. “You can even be an officer, alright?”

He then encouraged Ellis to stop pretending to be something he isn’t and “bring it back.”

However, what Asmongold actually thinks of Ellis is somewhat more complicated. In a separate post on X, he wrote, “Ngl I would prefer if we had more edgy, weird devs like how Tom used to be.”

He added that he “doesn’t appreciate being told to be a ‘better human’” by someone with Ellis’s alleged social media history.

Asmongold’s invitation is clearly a joke, but it could prove to be a particularly painful one for Ellis. After spending days defending Blizzard’s moderation and telling players to become “better humans,” he has effectively received a public endorsement from the man whose Olympus guild has become a lightning rod for complaints about WoW: Forever’s community.

Asmongold’s invitation may be less an olive branch than a kiss of death.

Olympus Keeps Growing

Asmongold also has no intention of backing away from the controversy surrounding Olympus.

His creation has become less a traditional World of Warcraft guild and more a sprawling player movement. Because individual guilds are capped at 1,000 members, Olympus has expanded into dozens of separate guilds during the beta. A fan-created addon designed to track the network recently counted more than 35,000 characters across more than 70 Olympus guilds.

That enormous presence has generated complaints on Blizzard’s own forums, where some players have accused Olympus members of spamming chat, disrupting other guilds, and creating an unpleasant environment. Others have defended the group, arguing that Asmongold is bringing some old-school social chaos back to World of Warcraft.

Asmongold’s response is apparently to grow even larger.

He encouraged his followers to invite anyone complaining about Olympus to join the guild.

“That way, instead of complaining about the problem, they can be part of it,” he joked.

Causing Problems — Within the Terms of Service

The battle over Olympus increasingly looks like a struggle over what World of Warcraft should actually be.

Blizzard is trying to resurrect the older MMO experience with WoW: Forever. Developers have described the project as an attempt to recapture elements of the original game that disappeared as WoW became faster, more convenient, and less dependent on other players.

Ironically, Asmongold may be accomplishing that goal better than anyone.

Olympus is loud, chaotic, obnoxious to its critics, and impossible to ignore. It is also creating guild rivalries, massive player gatherings, spontaneous world PvP, community drama, and the kind of player-driven stories that once defined MMORPGs.

Asmongold made clear that he has little interest in turning Olympus into the sanitized community its critics apparently want.

“We will not be better humans. We will not be better people. We will be worse!” he declared.

“For us, we’re gonna cause problems,” Asmongold added, before winking and supplying the important qualifier: “within the terms of service.”

His final instruction summed up the entire Olympus experiment: “Be the degen you were born to be.”

That presents Blizzard with an uncomfortable problem. The company wants WoW: Forever to recapture what made the original game special, while Asmongold is demonstrating that nostalgia extends beyond talent trees, slower leveling, and old-school quest design.

Players also remember the unruly communities that made Azeroth unpredictable and alive. Whether Blizzard appreciates Olympus or not, Asmongold is helping revive that version of World of Warcraft — on the players’ terms rather than the company’s — while seemingly taking great care not to give Blizzard a legitimate reason to stop him.
