Paramount is putting Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender on the big screen after all.

According to Variety, the animated feature will receive a one-week limited theatrical run beginning July 24, just one day before it premieres on Paramount+. While many fans had hoped the film would return to theaters after Paramount shifted it to streaming last year, the release will be far more limited.

Instead of a nationwide rollout, screenings will take place only in Los Angeles and New York. The move also signals that Paramount intends to submit the film for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

A Brief Visit to Theaters

The film will screen from July 24 through July 30 at AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan and AMC Burbank Town Center 6 in Los Angeles, with three showings scheduled each day. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will also screen at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Even a limited theatrical release allows Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to qualify for awards consideration despite debuting primarily as a Paramount+ exclusive. It’s a strategy more commonly associated with Netflix—such as last year’s Frankenstein from Guillermo del Toro—than with legacy studios.

Originally developed as Avatar Studios’ first theatrical feature, the movie was delayed multiple times before Paramount ultimately decided to skip theaters entirely in favor of a streaming release. That decision sparked disappointment among longtime fans, as well as members of the creative team.

Director Lauren Montgomery addressed fans in a social media post following the announcement.

“The recent decision to move us from theatrical to streaming might give the impression that the quality wasn’t sufficient, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth,” she wrote. “This movie deserves to be seen on a big screen!!! Can’t wait for you all to see it!”

At no point did Paramount suggest that concerns about the film’s quality were behind its decision to pull it from theaters. Now, by giving Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender a limited release in key markets, the opposite appears to be true. With Paramount-Skydance CEO David Ellison also promising more wide theatrical releases in the future, the decision remains somewhat puzzling.

Did the Leak Change Paramount’s Plans?

There is some speculation that Paramount chose to make Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender a streaming exclusive after the film leaked online in full last April. The unauthorized leak spread rapidly across social media, prompting condemnation from members of the production team.

It also renewed backlash over several creative decisions, most notably the replacement of the original voice cast with actors whose backgrounds more closely align with the cultural and ethnic influences behind the characters.

Earlier this month, Paramount also moved the film’s streaming debut forward from October 9 to July 25, a change widely viewed as an effort to lessen the impact of the leak.

Most Fans Still Won’t See It in Theaters

While the theatrical announcement is welcome news for some, most fans will still be unable to experience the film on the big screen.

Whether the limited release helps position the film as a serious awards contender remains to be seen. But after months of delays, a high-profile leak, and repeated changes to its release strategy, Team Avatar’s latest adventure will finally receive at least a brief moment in theaters before arriving on Paramount+.
