Marvel Studios just took a very public hit — and the optics are brutal. In what many are already calling a symbolic turning point for the franchise, Avengers Doomsday will not release in IMAX theaters

This news follows confirmation that Dune: Part Three has secured the premium large-format screens domestically for opening weekend. For a studio that once dominated every inch of the theatrical landscape, this development is raising serious questions about how much ground Marvel has quietly lost.

Both films are set to open December 18, 2026 — the same high-stakes holiday corridor that studios typically reserve for their biggest event releases. However, during a recent IMAX investor presentation, it was confirmed that Dune: Part Three locked down exclusive U.S. IMAX screens for that crucial opening frame.

That means Marvel’s next Avengers entry — once the undisputed king of premium formats — will be forced to sit on the sidelines domestically during the most important weekend of its launch.

How Did Marvel End Up Here?

The situation didn’t happen overnight.

Avengers: Doomsday was originally slated for May 1, 2026, but the film was later pushed to the crowded December window — after Dune: Part Three had already planted its flag. In the world of IMAX negotiations, timing is everything, and in this case Marvel was too late.

The result? Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic now owns the premium large-format conversation heading into opening weekend.

Yes, Doomsday is still expected to play in IMAX internationally during its debut and could potentially secure domestic IMAX screens in later weeks. But let’s be honest: opening weekend is where the prestige — and the perception battle — is won.

And right now, Marvel isn’t winning that battle.

A Far Cry From the Infinity Saga Era

There was a time when an Avengers film muscling aside competitors for IMAX screens was practically a foregone conclusion. During the height of the Infinity Saga, Marvel releases weren’t negotiating from a position of strength — they were dictating terms.

This latest development tells a different story.

Over the past several years, audience enthusiasm for the MCU has cooled compared to its peak, while filmmaker-driven spectacles like Villeneuve’s Dune franchise have steadily built credibility with both critics and premium format exhibitors.

IMAX, at the end of the day, is a business. The company prioritizes projects it believes will maximize demand for its format. The fact that Dune: Part Three secured the exclusive domestic window speaks volumes about where industry confidence currently sits.

Not Necessarily a Box Office Death Blow — But Still a Problem

To be clear, losing IMAX screens does not automatically doom Avengers: Doomsday. There is precedent for major hits thriving without premium format dominance.

The “Barbenheimer” summer of 2023 proved that point vividly. Barbie became the year’s top earner despite Oppenheimer controlling IMAX availability.

However, context matters.

Marvel is no longer operating from the same cultural high ground it enjoyed five or six years ago. When momentum is already under scrutiny, even symbolic losses — like surrendering IMAX opening weekend — carry extra weight.

Perception shapes narratives, and right now the narrative is uncomfortable for Disney.

The Bigger Picture

If anything, this clash highlights how competitive the premium theatrical space has become. The days when Marvel automatically owned the biggest screens in the building appear to be over — at least for now.

Whether Avengers: Doomsday ultimately wins at the box office remains to be seen. The holiday corridor is long, and Marvel still commands enormous brand recognition worldwide.

But make no mistake: when an Avengers film loses the opening IMAX spotlight to another franchise, it’s going to turn heads.
