Walt Disney World has removed references to a previously expected “exploding dynamite” finale like the one seen in Disneyland from its official description of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The change follows the attraction’s extended closure, which began on January 6, 2025, for a major refurbishment expected to last into 2026.

Previously, the official Walt Disney World website stated that guests would “dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders” during their ride. Previously, the description read:
After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an active mine shaft and board your runaway train. As you enter the cavern, the engine speeds up along the rickety track. Dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as you swoop around turns, drop into canyons and dart through the town of Tumbleweed.
However, the newest version is missing this part.
The omission has led many observers to conclude that an explosive finale—initially rumored to be included—may no longer be part of the refurbishment plans. Though Disney never officially confirmed such a scene, the wording change marks a shift in how the update is publicly framed.
Big Thunder Mountain Exploding Finale Background
At Disneyland in California, a 2014 refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad introduced a dynamite-themed finale on the final lift hill. That version used projection mapping, sound effects, lighting, and smoke to simulate an explosion triggered by a mischievous goat chewing on dynamite. The scene was well received for its technical improvements and updated pacing.

Many assumed Magic Kingdom’s version would follow suit. However, the recent removal of the dynamite description indicates that the ride’s refurbishment may take a different direction. The finale may remain as it previously was at the Magic Kingdom.
Work on the Florida version has been ongoing since early January. As of August, visible changes include the demolition of large rockwork elements, removal of animatronic props, and installation of new infrastructure. A new lift hill is being constructed, and sections of the track have been replaced.
Disney has also revealed that the updated attraction will include a new Rainbow Caverns scene, referencing the 1956 Disneyland Mine Train attraction. The Rainbow Caverns segment is expected to feature glowing stalactites and vibrant waterfalls.

Disney has not announced a firm reopening date, but signs at the attraction’s entrance state “Coming in 2026.” Construction permits filed earlier this year list an estimated completion by the end of March 2026.

As of now, Disney has not commented on the removal of the “exploding dynamite” language or whether additional effects will be added before the reopening. Without an official statement, fans are reading this omission as a sign that a changed finale may not happen now.
