In recent months, comedian and political commentator Bill Maher, historically a left wing late night commentator, has increasingly positioned himself as a centrist voice in a polarized American landscape.

Known for his sharp wit and unapologetic takes on politics, Maher has ramped up his criticism of what he calls the “stupid woke” elements on the left, while also engaging in unexpected cross-aisle interactions, including a notable dinner with President Donald Trump.

Maher’s Critique of ‘Stupid Woke’ and Whoopi Goldberg

On a Club Random podcast episode posted on Monday, July 28, 2025, Maher took aim at progressive excesses, particularly targeting The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg’s comments comparing the experiences of Black Americans in 2025 to women in Iran.

Maher described such views as infuriating and outdated, labeling them as part of the “stupid woke.”

“That is something that, again, is infuriating about the far left, I would say,” Maher noted. “Call them whatever they wanted. Not the woke, the stupid woke, like Whoopi Goldberg, love her, but when she said a couple weeks ago that being Black was the same as being a woman in Iran, it’s like, yeah, in 1920, but not today.”

He suggested Goldberg watch the Apple series Tehran for a more accurate perspective on Iran’s current realities.

During the podcast with liberal YouTube personality Brian Tyler Cohen, Maher expanded on his frustrations with the left’s reluctance to engage with opposing views. He criticized the attitude of refusing to “break bread” with conservatives, calling it the “stupidest thing the left does.” Maher argued that this isolationist mindset alienates potential allies and hinders progress.

“The stupidest thing the left does,” Maher said, “is having this attitude toward the right that: ‘We won’t even break bread with you. We are so far above you that we won’t even sit down at the same table with you!’ That is their attitude — and that makes me sick too!”

Maher also slammed New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, as a “walking commercial for the Republican Party nationally.”

Admitting He Was Wrong on Trump’s Tariffs

In a striking moment of self-reflection, Maher admitted during the same podcast that he was mistaken about the economic impact of President Trump’s tariffs, which he had previously predicted would devastate the U.S. economy by July 2025.

“I remember I, along with probably most people, were saying at the beginning, ‘Oh, you know, by the 4th of July… the economy was going to be tanked by then,’ and I was kind of like, ‘Well, that seems right to me,’” Maher said. “But that didn’t happen. Now, it could happen tomorrow. I’m just saying, that’s reality.”

He continued, “The truth is, I don’t know what his strategy is, but look, the stock market is at record highs… I also drive around. I don’t see a country in a depression at all. I see people out there just living their lives. I would have thought — and I gotta own it — that these tariffs were going to f—–g sink this economy by this time, and they didn’t. How do we deal with that fact? Because that’s the fact.”

This admission, reported by outlets like Fox News and The Daily Caller, highlighted Maher’s willingness to acknowledge errors when evidence contradicts his initial assumptions. He noted positive economic indicators, such as a 0.1% increase in manufacturing output in June and a sixth consecutive week of declining jobless claims, as factors challenging his earlier predictions.

Maher’s comments came in the context of Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced in April 2025, which included a 10% tariff on all nations and higher tariffs on countries like South Korea, Japan, India, and the European Union. Contrary to Maher’s fears, recent trade deals, including a 15% tariff agreement with the EU and a temporary tariff truce with China, have coincided with record stock market highs and economic stability.

The Dinner with Trump: A Surprising Bridge-Building Moment

Maher’s pereived centrist pivot gained significant attention in April 2025 when he revealed he had dinner with President Trump at the White House, an event arranged by mutual friend Kid Rock. The comedian shared details on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher” and social media, describing the encounter as eye-opening and emphasizing the importance of civil dialogue across divides.

In a YouTube clip titled “Mr. Maher Goes to Washington,” he recounted the experience, noting that “Private Trump” defied his public persona, appearing charming and self-deprecating.

The dinner sparked widespread discussion. Forbes published an article on April 17, 2025, titled “What Bill Maher and Trump’s Dinner Teaches Us About Civil Dialogue,” praising it as a lesson in courage and curiosity.

However, not all reactions were positive. Actor Sean Penn criticized Maher on his podcast, prompting Maher to defend the meeting in June 2025. Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David mocked the dinner in a satirical New York Times op-ed on April 22, 2025.

On X, users debated the implications. One post from July 29, 2025, quipped, “Bill Maher is still talking about having dinner with Trump. It’s happening. Maher is slowly falling under Trump’s spell.”

Another expressed concern: “Is this the same guy that Bill Maher sat down to dinner with? Maher said he was charming and self-depreciating. Trump must have done his best to reign in the CRAZY for that one night.” Critics accused Maher of being “MAGA” in disguise, while supporters saw it as a step toward unity.

Is Bill Maher Making a Centrist Turn?

Maher’s actions—criticizing the “stupid woke,” admitting his error on Trump’s tariffs, and dining with the president—could suggest a deliberate shift toward centrism, driven by frustration with leftist extremism and a willingness to engage conservatives. This isn’t entirely new—Maher has long critiqued both parties—but his tariff admission and the Trump dinner mark bold escalations.

As he told Cohen, engaging across aisles is essential.

This stance resonates in a divided America, where polls show growing fatigue with polarization. Maher’s approach could influence moderates, though it risks alienating his liberal base.

“We’re going to win so much, you may get tired of winning” – Donald J. Trump, 45th and 47th President of the United States of America.

Except when it comes to a certain list.

I hate Maher more than the View. The latter are honest in their lunacy, while he pretends to be a centrist. Never forget that he wished an economic crisis on the people so that Trump would lose in 2020.

TTTRRRUUUTTTHHH

Is there a reason you’ve adopted the left’s writing style and randomly capitalize the word “black”? From my experience that’s only done by members of that most modern of American religious movements, the cult of negro worship.
