SteamDB user review data for Black Myth: Wukong

The most helpful review praises the game, “Beat the first boss which is the one in the trailer, the white wolf. And I have to say, so far really enjoying the game. It’s basically a Chinese God of War (2018) and the Jedi Fallen series, and like those games it has some soulsborne influences, but doesn’t lean too heavily into it. If you enjoyed God of War (2018) and the Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor, then you will definitely enjoy this, personally find this to be a bit more fun.”

Another states, “Visually stunning. Despite saying better on a controller, I actually like the gameplay on my mouse and keyboard. I’m not usually into this type of genre often but I am very much enjoying the story and especially the visuals. PURE EYE CANDY. Running on a 4080 Super @ 3440×1440 I’m getting a steady 60-80 fps with graphics set to ‘cinematic’, the highest it goes with RT set to High. No crashing or issues seen yet detected and game is running smoooth as butter.”

A third praises, “Reject modernity, embrace monke[y]. Prologue happened after the story of Journey to the west. By the end of original story, Wukong finished the journey, got the scripture and was rewarded with immortality, ascending into buddha (think gods) themselves. The black myth story starts from there, where Wukong had given up his godhood, because he didn’t want to be confined by the rules of heaven. he then went back to Huaguo Mountain (think his hometown/neighborhood) where he was the monkey king before going on the journey to the west.

He continues, “However, having his history with the heaven(he was basically a terrorist for fun), the gods were not too pleased with him being in the wilds again. That’s when they sent the heavenly armies to the mountain, where the prologue happened. Wukong himself supposedly died in that event, and the monkeys appeared after the prologue were the descendants of the survived monkeys. The rock in that scene is supposedly where the body of Wukong resides. Since Wukong cannot enter the cycle of life and death(read buddism concept for this), his spirit shattered into 6 different artifacts and was scattered around the world. At this point I’m assuming the story of this game is finding those 6 artifacts.”

“In the original story, the crew went through 81 calamity on their way to the west. First chapter of this game is the player Monkey going through the first of those 81 monsters they had encountered . Ofc with the context being in the world post journey. That’s about it without major spoilers & with how far i got before bedtime. Imo you really gotta either read the book or watch the TV series AND have some surface understanding of buddism concepts to really enjoy the story. That said, banger combat,” he concludes.
