Whereas Kathleen Kennedy’s career with The Walt Disney Company is in limbo for a variety of reasons, Dave Filoni’s stock just continues to soar. The newest series from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, which is crafted without any significant input from Kennedy, is taking off on YouTube. And while many Star Wars, Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy videos are downvoted into oblivion, the ratio for The Book of Boba Fett trailer is an astounding success.
Trending at #3 on YouTube, and featuring more than 250,000 upvotes (to only 4,000 downvotes), this is certainly what Star Wars needs to get back in the game. Recent rumors have indicated there may be difficulty getting more than three seasons out of The Mandalorian, and Pedro Pascal has not even been available for Season 3 production. This has led to many believing the star will have to “phone it in” with voice dubs. It makes one wonder if the titular character will be removing his helmet much this go around. The series has been on shaky ground every since the Gina Carano situation. So having a new Star Wars product rise in popularity must be a huge relief to those worried the golden goose was once again down for the count.

The Book of Boba Fett trailer features obscure references to Star Wars material that is sure to please the most die hard fans. Yet it presents a concept and a theme that draws in general audiences. Filoni is a genius in having a fear versus respect dynamic drive the narrative tension, while effortlessly weaving in droid concepts that were previously on the cutting room floor. The footage is a perfect weaving of old and new, continuing to show that the “Favroni” Star Wars Universe is the way forward in connecting all the trilogies and their disparate aesthetics.
I was looking at some concept art from the Phantom Menace and it looks to be the same droid seen in the book of boba fett trailer

If Lucasfilm can avoid mishaps, celebrity drama, and political controversies, the pain may be limited to the shortening of one stalwart series. The Mandalorian was the driving force behind much of Disney+’s early growth. Yet after the issues with the Gina Carano firing, Disney+ has seen stagnant subscriber increases in North America. That’s even with Loki becoming the number one streaming series on any service. It would serve everyone well if Lucasfilm can keep things running smoothly so that The Book of Boba Fett has a chance to get Disney+ rolling again.
To do that, Kathleen Kennedy is going to have to put partisanship and social media drama in the past. Kill it if you have to, Mrs. Kennedy.
