The wildest ride in the wilderness just became a very hot topic… and yes, we apologize for the pun.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reportedly experienced a fire on its very first day back in operation after months of work to replace its track and add new attraction elements. Under the watchful eye of a new generation of Imagineers, it would appear that a familiar pattern is emerging. Remember that Splash Mountain was overhauled into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and suffered a similar fate involving the need to be drained during previews and becoming one of the least reliable attractions in the parks. Epcot, similarly, has had broken lighting issues since getting its overhaul. But an actual fire on a re-worked attraction is even a step beyond all of that.

Blog Mickey reports that the attraction did indeed suffer a fire and that an official call was placed at Walt Disney World:
A call for a fire was placed around 5:45pm and the attraction remains closed as of 7:30pm.

Not only were cast members seen with fire extinguishers as emergency personnel made their way to the scene, but the ride also suffered a serious Re-Opening Day snafu: a hasty and complete evacuation of the premises.

It also appears that guests were on the ride when the fire broke out and had to be evacuated from their vehicles:

In positive news for the attraction, guests do say the experience is far smoother and pleasant. So who knows? Maybe this was just a very unfortunate situation in which brakes became too hot, smoke appears inside the load area, and a cast member used a fire extinguisher. Or perhaps we’re going to find out there are more mechanical problems with a ride that has always been known for reliability. One thing is for sure: we were expecting debates about whether they changed the ride speed, not if the classic attraction is going to be a boondoggle for maintenance!
This just in, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is now the smoothest ride in the wilderness. 🏜️🎢🚂 pic.twitter.com/YCsOoMs7jJ
