Actress Brie Larson, who plays Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently teased that there are more stories for Marvel Studios to tell about her character.

While promoting The Marvels and Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Larson was asked, “Is there anything you would still love to see her do that she hasn’t quite done yet?”

Larson responded, “Oh! Goodness gracious! I think there’s still so much inside of Carol. I feel like getting to be on this team cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been, and I really loved that for her. Like, I just loved her just letting the shoulders drop a little bit and not need to feel all the responsibility was on her.”

“So I think that there’s just so much more to go,” Larson continued. “I mean she’s just a great character to continue to grow with. Like as I’m growing, she’s growing.”

“Well, yeah. I don’t want Marvel to come for me, but there’s just something, — there’s definitely something — to answer your question that I would want to say, but I’m not going to. So, I’ll just say it’s here (she taps herself on the head) and I hear what you’re saying,” she concluded.

This appears to be a very different approach to a similar question she was asked last September during the D23 expo. She was asked, “How long will you play Captain Marvel for?”

Larson answered, “I don’t know. I don’t know. Does anyone want me to do it again?”

After Variety’s Marc Malkin responded, “Don’t be so modest,” Larson added, “I don’t know. I really don’t know. I don’t have an answer to that.”

There was also a rumor from Joanna Robinson, the author or MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, who claimed in the book that Larson had grown disillusioned with the role of Carol Danvers.

Robinson wrote, “The future of those Marvel icons was unclear. The departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits. The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland.

In an appearance on The Watch podcast, Robinson also broached the topic saying, “I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role necessarily, but the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore.”

She added, “That’s sort what she said. She was interviewed at D23 and they’re like, so you know we’re gonna see a bunch more from Carol Danvers. She’s like, ‘I don’t know. Does anyone want to see me play Carol Danvers? Doesn’t seem like it.’”

It’s unclear what the future holds for Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, but it’s hard not to imagine that the character might get permanently shelved after The Marvels’ performance at the box office.

The film set the Marvel Cinematic Universe record for the worst opening weekend by just bringing in $46.1 million.

It followed that one up by setting the record for the largest second weekend drop in MCU history. The film only grossed an estimated $10.2 million in its second weekend, a 78% decline from the first weekend.

The film has currently grossed $65 million at the domestic box office and another $96.3 million internationally for a global total of $161.3 million. A number of analysts believe the film will struggle to hit the $200 million mark globally.
