Bungie Claims It’s “Not Done With Destiny” and Vows to Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Content

Bungie has promised to restore years of removed Destiny 2 content following a strong player response to the planned end of new updates.

The studio recently announced that Monuments of Triumph would be Destiny 2’s final content update. However, the reaction was apparently strong enough to make Bungie reconsider those plans.

“When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force,” Bungie leaders Poria Torkan and Josh Deane wrote in a blog post. “Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact.”

Bungie then delivered the declaration many fans had been waiting to hear.

“We are not done with Destiny,” the company stated.

Bungie Promises to “Restore What’s Rightfully Yours”

Alongside the written announcement, Torkan and Deane released a video outlining their plans for the franchise.

“We want to return Destiny to its original promise. To return to awe-inspiring mystery, the sense of discovery, and the promise of a community of Guardians rallying together, raging against impossible odds,” they said. “But that has to start with restoring what’s rightfully yours.”

“It’s going to take some time,” they continued. “I wish we could just flip a freaking switch. But we’re going to commit to unvaulting the Destiny 2 campaigns, the destinations, the raids that never should have been ripped away to begin with.”

For the uninitiated, Destiny is Bungie’s online science-fiction shooter franchise about immortal warriors called Guardians defending humanity from alien threats.

Players explore shared worlds, collect weapons and armor, complete story campaigns, and tackle challenging cooperative raids. Since launching in 2014, the franchise has developed an enormous mythology and a community deeply invested in its ongoing narrative.

That history makes Bungie’s promise especially significant.

Bungie Will Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Content

Bungie confirmed that work has begun to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids. The returning material will eventually become available to all Destiny 2 players.

The studio also acknowledged that removing those experiences damaged player trust and diminished the game.

“We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right,” Bungie stated.

Beginning with 2020’s Beyond Light expansion, Bungie placed large portions of Destiny 2 into its controversial Destiny Content Vault. That process removed entire campaigns and destinations, preventing players from experiencing major chapters of the story.

Some customers had purchased content that later became inaccessible. New players were also dropped into an ongoing narrative without access to many of its foundational events.

Restoring that material will require more than simply reactivating old files. Bungie explained that its lighting, encounters, enemies, and underlying systems must be updated for the current game.

The studio provided no timetable but promised to reveal additional details in the coming months.

Players Forced Bungie to Listen

Bungie deserves some credit for acknowledging its mistake, but the company’s statement makes clear who produced this reversal: the players.

Content creator Legendary Drops emphasized that point.

“I never want to hear that your voice doesn’t matter or that you can’t make these companies change,” he wrote. “They need YOUR MONEY. YOUR LOYALTY. Without it they fail.”

He added, “While I applaud the change in direction, it was the players that made this happen. Not Bungie and definitely not Sony.”

Former game developer Mark Kern similarly celebrated the announcement, arguing that Bungie had finally admitted it stopped listening to gamers.

Promises alone will not restore the goodwill Bungie squandered. However, players refused to quietly accept the end of Destiny 2’s continued development, and the company finally heard them.

Now Bungie must prove that its dramatic reversal will produce more than another round of corporate assurances.
