Captain America: Brave New World has finally hit theaters, but the production was anything but smooth. Plagued by endless reshoots, political controversy, and behind-the-scenes drama, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) arrives under a dark cloud of fan skepticism and industry fatigue.

The film, which sees Anthony Mackie take up the shield as Captain America, carries immense financial and cultural pressure. As the second standalone MCU film to center on a Black superhero after Black Panther, and the first solo outing for Mackie’s Sam Wilson following The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, expectations were high. But with a ballooning $180 million budget (including costly reshoots), disastrous test screenings, and mounting controversies, Brave New World may be one of Marvel’s biggest flops to date.

Behind-the-Scenes Drama and Costly Reshoots

According to Vulture, a technical crew member who worked on the film’s reshoots noted that the Captain America: Brave New World production was a nightmare. The movie underwent 22 days of extensive reshoots after catastrophic test screenings left Disney scrambling to fix what insiders described as a “rough production.” Adding to the chaos, Disney made an 11th-hour decision to include a new supervillain, played by Giancarlo Esposito, forcing major action sequences to be reworked at great expense.

“I think everyone on the crew knew this is probably not going to be a good film. Some of the action sequences were not believable. We had a lot of frustrations on set,” the source said, describing the confusion on set. “After principal photography was finished, it was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to introduce the leader of the Serpent Society.’ It was on, then it was off, then it was on again. That’s very expensive to do.”

Harrison Ford’s Behavior and Production Woes

Much of the tension behind the scenes reportedly stemmed from Harrison Ford, who portrays Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Ford, now 82, was described as difficult to work with, living up to his reputation as a Hollywood curmudgeon.

“Harrison Ford was one of the crankiest performers I ever dealt with,” a source close to the production said. “Which was sad. I’m a fan. But he was very much a diva… He couldn’t even raise his left arm above his chest [due to a previous plane crash]. We had to suit up 80-something Harrison Ford in these motion-capture dots. To me, it seemed like he hated it and didn’t want to do it.”

This difficult dynamic reportedly made for a miserable working environment, with the crew walking on eggshells to accommodate Ford’s demands.

Political Minefield and a Title Change

The political climate surrounding the film has only added to Disney’s troubles. Initially titled Captain America: New World Order, the movie faced backlash from political commentators who linked the title to certain political hate movements. The studio eventually renamed it Brave New World to avoid further controversy.

But the problems didn’t end there. In one of the film’s trailers, a scene depicting an assassination attempt on President Ross was swiftly removed from marketing materials after the real-life assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This decision was another indication of Disney’s fear of inflaming political tensions during an already volatile election year.

A crew member noted that Ross was meant to allude to the sitting US President.

“General Ross reads as an allusion to Trump,” the source said. “He’s this very powerful general who becomes kind of a fa*cist and turns into a raging Red Hulk… I think Disney was realizing, ‘Hey, we’ve been bleeding for a while. Let’s try not to piss off our core base any more than we have been over the last couple of years.’”

Mackie’s Controversial Press Tour and Botched Damage Control

Adding fuel to the fire was Anthony Mackie’s disastrous press tour, where he sparked outrage by suggesting that Captain America shouldn’t represent America.

During a press event in Rome, Mackie stated: “Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations.”

The backlash was swift, with many accusing Mackie of being anti-American and misunderstanding the character’s legacy. In response, Mackie quickly issued a social media statement, attempting to walk back his comments.

“Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like Cap is the honor of a lifetime,” he said. “I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country.”

However, his “apology” only added to the confusion, as he never explicitly stated that Captain America represents American ideals—only that he himself is a proud American.

A Sinking Ship for Marvel?

All of these controversies are landing at the worst possible time for Marvel Studios. Under Bob Iger’s directive to “reduce output and focus more on quality,” the studio is hoping Brave New World can reverse the trend of box office failures that plagued The Marvels and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. But with superhero fatigue at an all-time high and audience trust in Marvel at an all-time low, Brave New World may be doomed before it even begins.

One crew member summed up the production experience bleakly:

“At the end of the day, it was the most tense Marvel shoot I’ve ever worked on. Everyone kind of felt their buttholes tightening a little bit. It’s like, Ugh.”

Between Mackie’s messaging debacle, Ford’s on-set behavior, politically charged controversies, and Disney’s hypocrisy on full display, Captain America: Brave New World may live up to its title—just not in the way Disney hoped.
