Carl Weathers Just Announced a Star Wars Multiverse?

Perhaps it was a slip of the tongue, a confusion of fictional terms, a faux pas with nothing more behind it. Or perhaps Carl Weathers just shook the entire Star Wars world.

Just in case you missed it, the Mandalorian season 3 trailer dropped last night. It’s only been a few hours, but the buzz seems to be positive. Predictably, there is a contingent of commenters who seem genuinely confused at the presence of Grogu (aka “Baby Yoda”). It seems that not all of us endured to the end of Book of Boba Fett.

If you don’t want Book of Boba Fett spoiled, skip the next two paragraphs…

All I can say about that is the leadup to last few episodes of The Book of Boba are required viewing for people who want to keep up with the story of the Mandalorian Din Djarin. They are so integral that fandom speculates that the Book of Boba was going so poorly in the ratings that Lucasfilm pulled two episodes of the unreleased Mandalorian season 3 and sandwiched them into Book of Boba Fett, and then called in one of our favorite mandalorian’s stunt actors to put on the suit and report to the Boba Fett set.

Either way, the two episodes of The Book of Boba Fett that don’t feature or reference Boba Fett and focus exclusively on Din Djarin, Grogu, Ahsoka, and Luke Skywalker are truly great television, whereas the rest of the show is “varying” in quality.

Spoilers over.

It’s not unusual for cast members of a big show like the Mandalorian to share out trailers and press on social media. Rocky legend Carl Weathers, who plays Greef Karga on the Mandalorian, did just that. Before the trailer dropped, Carl Weathers quote tweeted a post from the main Mandalorian show twitter account announcing the pending arrival on ESPN and ABC. The poster looks great. But it’s Carl Weathers’s additional text that is raising eyebrows.

“Come on, ya’ll!!! This Mandalorian poster is too cool! Love being part of the Star Wars Multiverse. March 1, 2023, baby. #GreefKarga #BePeace

Star Wars… “Multiverse”?!

Frankly, Carl Weathers… what does that mean?

Is Star Wars planning to go the way of the MCU and introduce multiple timelines where anything can happen, death is meaningless, and nothing is impossible? Or will they take a more metered, “alternate 1985” approach like the Evil Biff timeline in Back to the Future Part II?

Fans have speculated for a long time (and we have covered alleged leaks and rumors) that include the idea that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau might be planning to erase the sequel trilogy by use of “The World Between Worlds,” a concept introduced into the current canon via the animated Star Wars shows which features portals to different points in the Star Wars timeline. So far that concept seems to transport people through time and space rather than create branching timelines, but perhaps we just haven’t heard enough to understand it.

It could be also that Lucasfilm is using the word “multiverse” to refer to the “elseworlds” style content like the Star Wars Visions series on Disney+, which is reported to be on track for a second season. Did they use the phrase during production and Carl Weathers just repeated it? He’s directed episodes in the past so he’s more involved than most actors in a Star Wars production.

Or… did Carl Weathers just misuse a loaded phrase accidentally?

As of the writing of this article, the tweet is still up. Who knows if it will disappear once the Lucasfilm social media team logs in the AM, Pacific standard time.

With all of that being said, we would REALLY like to know what you think. Comment below or reach out on social media. Obviously we will be covering the Mandalorian her on That Park Place!

I think this was just an Old Man Mistake. Maybe he thinks having multiple shows in the same universe is a “multiverse”, or something. I don’t see Weathers as being real savvy about how these things work.
