One of Disney World’s most classic attractions finally receives an update. It’s very small but maybe that’s as it should be for now.

It’s been a long, long time since we saw any improvements for the Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. By construction and maintenance standards, this 19070s classic is a relic. Seriously, ask any cast member or maintenance person who has gone underneath the building to its engine room and animatronic movement chassis. It’s something.

Yet people keep going back and back and back. It’s a testament to the Sherman Brothers’ hit son, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow”. And it’s odd now that the show which was once about the progress of the future is now more about a hit of nostalgia and simpler times. So I’m torn about what they should do with the attraction. Frankly, I’m just glad it’s still standing. But though some call for it to be updated, I worry that the current Disney Parks leadership would ruin the whole thing. Yes, the attraction definitely needs a more diverse set of cast, and no, the format doesn’t work anymore the way it is set up (1920s, 1940s, 1960s, 1999). At the same time, I’d be afraid they would try to inject it with modern politics and social movements if they touched it now.

So I’ll take what I can get. And what I can get is this new touch-up of the scene, the clothes, and even some animatronic heads for the final act. Take a look at them courtesy of the great @dsnynewscast on Twitter:

It only took twenty-two years to get a freshening up of the final act. Maybe in today’s climate, that’s a good thing.
