Late-night veteran Conan O’Brien is opening up about the shocking loss of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer, who were killed shortly after leaving O’Brien’s holiday party last year.
O’Brien publicly processed the tragedy for the first time in a new interview.
Speaking with The New Yorker ahead of his upcoming Oscars hosting duties, O’Brien described the personal toll of the loss after he and his wife had grown increasingly close to Reiner and Singer.
“I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot,” O’Brien said. “My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so — they were just such lovely people. And to have that experience of saying goodnight to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone. … I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward. I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very — it’s so awful. It’s just so awful.”
What Happened to Rob Reiner and Michele Singer
Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead on Dec. 14th in what authorities described as a homicide. The couple had attended Conan O’Brien’s holiday party the night before and were killed shortly after leaving the gathering.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, both died from multiple sharp force injuries. Their son, Nick Reiner, was later arrested and charged with two counts of murder. Prosecutors say the charges carry a potential sentence of life without parole or the death penalty if he is convicted.
The shocking nature of the case — combined with the timing so soon after O’Brien’s party — quickly sent ripples through Hollywood and placed unexpected attention on the late-night host’s event.
O’Brien Still Struggling to Process the Loss
The comedian made clear that the sudden nature of the deaths has been difficult to fully grasp, particularly given Reiner’s continued public presence and political engagement in recent years.
“And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there — and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend,” O’Brien said.

The comments reflect the broader shock that has rippled through the entertainment community following the apparent homicide of Rob and Michele in December. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of murder, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney.
Reports From O’Brien’s Party Remain Unclear
In the days after the killings, several outlets including TMZ, People, and the Daily Mail published accounts from anonymous partygoers claiming Nick Reiner behaved erratically at Conan O’Brien’s holiday gathering. One Daily Mail report alleged that a guest nearly called 911 during an apparent confrontation between Nick and his father and that O’Brien discouraged the call.

According to a source cited by Variety, much of the attention centered on Nick Reiner’s interaction with comedian Bill Hader. The source said the Reiners arrived at the party alongside Hader, and later in the evening Nick approached the former Saturday Night Live star while he was speaking with friends. Nick reportedly asked guests their names and whether they were famous. Hader told him he was not famous and initially believed Nick “may have been doing some sort of comedy bit, a schtick.”
Claims that O’Brien discouraged a 911 call have not been independently verified and remain disputed. A source told Variety that neither O’Brien nor Hader witnessed a heated argument between Nick and his parents, contradicting some of the early reports.

Notably, O’Brien did not address the party allegations in his The New Yorker interview, focusing instead on his personal grief and Rob Reiner’s legacy.
A Historic Directorial Run
Beyond the personal grief, O’Brien also took time to highlight what he views as one of the most remarkable creative streaks in modern Hollywood — Rob Reiner’s string of hit films in the 1980s and early 1990s.

“These people are so larger than life, especially if you’ve grown up watching them or appreciating their work,” he said. “I mean, I just keep mulling over … the body of work, I think it’s seven movies that Rob Reiner made, in quick succession, that are classics. Now, if you can make one great movie, that’s impressive. It’s an almost impossible feat. To make two means that you’re one of the greats. To make seven — in, like, a nine-year, 10-year, 11-year period — is insanity. With Spinal Tap alone, if that’d been the only thing he ever did, he influenced my generation enormously.”
Hollywood Continues to React
O’Brien’s remarks add to the growing list of industry voices reacting to the tragedy. The late-night host found himself unexpectedly connected to the story after reports surfaced that the Reiner family had attended his holiday party the night before the deaths occurred.

As the legal case against Nick Reiner proceeds, the focus in Hollywood — at least publicly — has largely remained on remembering Rob Reiner’s legacy and the sudden nature of the loss.
For O’Brien, the shock clearly hasn’t faded.
And if his comments are any indication, the industry is still grappling with both the personal tragedy and the abrupt silence of one of its most recognizable creative voices.
