You may not be familiar with the name Christine McCarthy, but she’s been a shrewd and cunning Chief Executive Officer for The Walt Disney Company for years now. She managed the company through the pandemic, and she’s earned a reputation within the industry for being as cutthroat as they come. You might think those are harsh descriptions, but what else can be said about a woman who sort of calls her own customers fat when wanting to cut costs, in addition to calling concentration camp headlines “publicity”.

“It [filming near concentration camps and thanking the government that runs the concentration camps] has generated a lot of publicity. Let’s leave it at that.”

— Christine McCarthy, The Walt Disney Company CFO

However, it is not surprising that the news is McCarthy is receiving a three-year extension of her contract, meaning she’s renewed all the way through 2024. McCarthy is a ruthless Return on Investment executive, and she’s been very successful in limiting Disney’s risk and losses during the pandemic. Although this year has not been kind to the company, either regarding profits or stock value changes, Mrs. McCarthy lines up well with other “numbers” executives like Bob Chapek and Board Director Susan Arnold.

For fans, McCarthy is likely to push for properties and content that drives better business, so perhaps it is a positive. For ethical and sociopolitical movements, McCarthy has a history of pushing for profit at all costs. One thing is for sure: Disney is likely to keep McCarthy away from microphones as much as possible lest she make more untoward commentary.
