Cracker Barrel posted a video today that showed workers tearing down new “modern” signage to put the classic Uncle Herschel sign back in its place. But the audience is letting Cracker Barrel and its CEO know that this problem never should’ve happened in the first place.

August 21st, 2025 is a date that will live in infamy for Cracker Barrel. On that day it was first announced by Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Felss Masino, that their old timey, well known logo was changing. It would be simplified, homogenized, and their mascot, “Uncle Herschel” leaning on a barrel, would be removed.

This change had already begun, but until the official announcement was made, it had largely flown under the radar for many long time fans of the Cracker Barrel brand. This move was not only met with a firestorm of online backlash, but it inspired an investigation in to other changes being made by current Cracker Barrel corporate leadership that, once uncovered, opened a Pandora’s Box of decisions that absolutely fly in the face of Cracker Barrel’s long standing consumer base, and what the company has traditionally represented.

Backlash Bigger Than A Barrel of Crackers!

After the initial logo change announcement, there was a tsunami of backlash on social media, particularly on X. Betrayed Cracker Barrel fans felt that the removal of Uncle Herschel was an attempt to be overly woke, and that it was in complete opposition to the brand’s traditional, down home charm.

Others questioned whether the company was changing its core values. There were quite a few comments expressing anger at the change, and nostalgia for the original logo.

A Dr. Lucien Wolfe made the following comment about the change, “They didn’t just change a restaurant — they destroyed a piece of Americana. What families built over decades got gutted by corporate vandals. Question is… how much of America’s soul are we gonna let them strip next?” And that was the tip of the iceberg when it came to the backlash. A backlash that uncovered a multitude of changes that ostracized their loyal customer base – and changes that cost the company big!

A $700 Million Dollar Mistake

“Egregious error” might be the nicest way of putting it, when discussing all the changes that Julie and her team were implementing company wide. The Cracker Barrel website displayed a page of organizational groups the company was supporting, some of which were completely out of line with the traditional family “front porch” values the company had built it’s reputation on.

After all, Cracker Barrel is literally touted as the “Old Country Store” – an environment where friends and family come together to enjoy a home cooked style meal, laugh over good times, and maybe take home a souvenir or two. Definitely not a place to discuss the latest trends in political talking points or even worse: adult bedroom issues!

And on the issue of food, it’s been unearthed through several employees coming forth, that Cracker Barrel changed their cooking methods from fresh, cooked-from-scratch biscuits to frozen, reheated and microwaved day old fair! All of this was going on during a company wide rebrand and overhaul at the cost of $700 Million Dollars!

They cut back on food quality, increased menu prices, and implemented DEI and ESG practices, all while removing Uncle Herschel and “updating” the look of their restaurants from traditional country with amazing antique decor, to something that looked more like a dystopian hospital cafeteria.

Fans were furious, and rightly so.

Cracker Barrel Caved

Cracker Barrel stock tanked on August 21st after the initial announcement about the removal of Uncle Herschel from the logo, losing nearly $100 million in market value in a single day!

That, along with fan backlash, and perhaps the realization that spending $700 Million Dollars on a rebrand that was obviously going to sink the company, prompted a fairly quick “about face” from leadership.

In an X post on the 26th of August, a mere 5 days after the initial post announcing the removal of Uncle Herschel, Cracker Barrel issued the following statement: “We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have.  Our new logo is going away and our “Old Timer” will remain. At Cracker Barrel, it’s always been – and always will be – about serving up delicious food, warm welcomes, and the kind of country hospitality that feels like family. As a proud American institution, our 70,000 hardworking employees look forward to welcoming you to our table soon.”

The public wondered if they would follow through. Finally, we now have that answer.

Cracker Barrel’s About Face —Too Little: A Little Too Late?

On the morning of September 15th, 2025, Cracker Barrel posted the following on X:

“Like any good relationship, sometimes you just need a little tune-up,” the company said. “We’re going back to the things that made us all fall in love in the first place.” This post, shown in full above, came with a video showing the replacement of the new logo sign with the original “Uncle Herschel” sign on one of their restaurant locations that had already been changed.

The video also shows workers changing back the decor inside the restaurant. But the question remains, “how much brand damage has already been done?”

Apparently, it’s a lot.

This particular thread is filled with replies that range from letting Cracker Barrel know they’d never return because the offense was untenable, to calling for the firing of the CEO.

X user “Nina Infinity” writes: “And to think this giant waste of money could have been avoided if you didn’t hire some weirdo who didn’t understand your market, at all.”

Charmane Harbert posted: “Did you fire the woman who thought that Americana and tradition didn’t matter to the majority of us? The woman who tried turning your homage to times gone by into a soulless box that erases the America that felt like home to we Americans that aren’t new here. Your store represented our traditions, our culture. Everywhere we look we see ourselves being replaced, erased by the likes of people like Julie Masino and her ‘army’ of cowardly yes men that haven’t got a clue as to what really matters.”

Those posts were the tip of the iceberg, and frankly some of the “nicest” replies on this thread initiated by Cracker Barrel. Many of the more “fiery” ones were heated enough to use some not-so “family friendly” language. And that is understandable considering all that the Cracker Barrel brand has stood for for decades: traditional Americana, a great home-cooked meal, friendly conversation and that simple, neighborly feel.

That’s all people want. Can Cracker Barrel truly restore all that? And even if they do, did they already set their brand on a pathway to bankruptcy?

They say “time heals all wounds”, but unfortunately Cracker Barrel’s self inflicted wound is so gaping, all the time in the world may not be enough for it to heal.

Will you return to Cracker Barrel any time soon? Are they doing enough to win back once loyal fans? Should CEO Julie Massino step down? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Some Loser

It’s far too late and not even the biggest issue. An issue to be sure but not the largest one they’ve got, the food is the biggest one followed by the rebranding/renovations and then the logo followed by just who is running the show.

Step 1… Fire the CEO… Step 2… Fix the Food… Step 3 hire someone people will trust to fix the brand…

And MAYBE I’ll come back…
