YouTuber Curry Barker is experiencing a meteoric rise through Hollywood and it’s going to continue with Universal.
Just weeks after Obsession became the biggest horror success story in recent memory, Barker has reportedly closed a lucrative new deal with Universal Film Group and Blumhouse Atomic Monster for his next original horror project. According to reports, the agreement is valued in the eight-figure range and will see Barker write, direct, and produce his third feature film under the growing partnership.
The announcement comes as Barker finds himself at the center of one of the most unexpected box office stories of 2026.
Universal Bets Big on Horror’s Newest Star
The new project remains shrouded in secrecy. Plot details, casting information, and even the title are being kept under wraps. What is known is that Universal was reportedly so impressed by Barker’s pitch that the studio moved aggressively to secure the project before it could go elsewhere. The film will once again be produced alongside Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the horror powerhouse led by Jason Blum and James Wan.
The deal also keeps Barker firmly within the Universal family.
His breakout feature Obsession was released through Focus Features, a Universal-owned label, while his already-completed follow-up film, Anything But Ghosts, is also set up through Focus Features and backed by many of the same creative partners.
For Universal, the move appears to be a straightforward calculation. When someone delivers one of the most profitable movies of the year on a shoestring budget, studios tend to move quickly to make sure that filmmaker doesn’t take his next project elsewhere.
The Obsession Phenomenon Changed Everything
The speed of Barker’s ascent is almost unprecedented.
The 26-year-old filmmaker first gained attention online through YouTube projects before breaking into mainstream horror with Obsession. Made for a reported budget of just $750,000, the film exploded into a theatrical phenomenon. It has earned over $300 million as of this writing, becoming one of the most profitable horror releases in recent memory.

What made the success particularly unusual was the movie’s staying power. Rather than opening huge and collapsing, Obsession continued growing week after week through word of mouth, repeatedly posting strong theatrical holds while larger studio releases like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of The Universe faded around it.
The film’s success has turned Barker into one of the most sought-after young directors in Hollywood. In addition to Anything But Ghosts, he is also attached to a new reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24, giving him multiple major studio projects before his 27th birthday.
A New Generation of Horror Filmmakers
Barker’s rise is also part of a larger trend reshaping the horror genre.
Studios have increasingly looked toward younger filmmakers who built audiences online rather than through traditional Hollywood channels. Barker’s success follows a path similar to other digital creators who have successfully transitioned into mainstream filmmaking, bringing built-in audiences and fresh creative perspectives with them.

For Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the partnership makes perfect sense. The combined horror powerhouse has built its reputation on finding promising genre talent and giving filmmakers room to create original projects. Barker’s ability to connect with younger audiences while delivering strong box office returns makes him exactly the type of filmmaker studios want to keep in-house.
The biggest question now is what Barker can accomplish with a significantly larger budget.
If Obsession managed to become a cultural phenomenon with less than a million dollars behind it, Universal executives are clearly interested in seeing what happens when one of horror’s hottest young directors is given major studio resources and a blank canvas for his next nightmare.
