Cynthia Erivo is once again expressing interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Storm. The Wicked star recently revisited the idea during an interview with Variety, calling the role a “childhood fantasy of mine.”

Erivo’s continued public campaign for the character is already generating debate. As Marvel prepares to reboot the X-Men for a new generation, some fans are questioning whether she would be the right choice for one of the franchise’s most popular heroes.

Cynthia Erivo Has Been Eyeing Storm For Years

Notably, the new interview is not the first time the Wicked star has expressed interest in portraying one of Marvel Comics’ biggest names. While attending the National Board of Review Awards Gala in 2025, Erivo was asked what role she wanted to pursue after Elphaba.

“I really want to play Storm,” Cynthia Erivo answered. “I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has. So I think there’s a world in which we could do something with that.”

Previous versions of Storm, such as Halle Berry’s portrayal in Fox’s X-Men films, focused primarily on the character’s weather-manipulating powers rather than her internal struggles. Erivo’s comments suggest she would prefer a more character-driven interpretation.

Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars appear poised to reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe and potentially pave the way for a new generation of X-Men actors. As a result, speculation surrounding future casting choices has intensified.

Marvel May Not Want Another Divisive Casting Debate

The conversation comes at a time when Marvel is attempting to win audiences back after years of divisive projects. Reports that Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk would not appear in the upcoming Avengers films were met with relief from some corners of the fandom. Critics of the character speculated that the decision may have been influenced, at least in part, by concerns that Maslany’s public comments about “toxic fans” had damaged audience goodwill.

Cynthia Erivo has also experienced public clashes with fans.

In 2024, a fan-made edit of the Wicked movie poster obscured part of Erivo’s eyes beneath Elphaba’s hat in an apparent attempt to more closely resemble the iconic Broadway artwork.

“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” Erivo wrote in a social media post.

The promotional campaigns for Wicked and Wicked: For Good also generated numerous viral moments. In some cases, the public conversation seemed to focus more on Erivo and Ariana Grande’s unusual behavior than on the films themselves. Rumors circulated around Hollywood that the attention may have contributed to backlash during awards season, with Wicked: For Good ultimately failing to secure major Oscar recognition.

While Cynthia Erivo may want to play Storm, the role would connect her to another franchise with a passionate and highly creative fanbase. Disney and Marvel may be reluctant to attach one of their most important future projects to a performer who has already developed a reputation for publicly engaging with fan controversies.

The X-Men Reboot Is Too Important To Get Wrong

An X-Men reboot may be one of the most important projects currently on Marvel’s horizon. Following a series of box office disappointments and declining enthusiasm for parts of the MCU, the studio needs a version of the mutant team that can unite audiences rather than divide them.

There is no question that Erivo genuinely wants to play Storm. The question facing Marvel, however, is not whether Cynthia Erivo wants the role. It is whether casting her would help the studio win back audiences—or create another controversy before the reboot even begins.
