Amazon’s live-action God of War series may have found its new Ghost of Sparta. According to a new report from Variety, Dave Bautista is currently in talks to take over the role of Kratos after Ryan Hurst exited the production following a serious on-set injury that reportedly forced Amazon and Sony to recast the character in order to keep the series on schedule.

The move would mark a significant shakeup for one of Amazon MGM Studios’ most anticipated video game adaptations, which already has a two-season order from Prime Video.

Ryan Hurst’s Injury Forces Major Recasting

Ryan Hurst was originally announced as Kratos earlier this year, but production hit an unexpected obstacle after the actor reportedly suffered a torn bicep while filming. According to Variety, the injury would have delayed production until sometime in 2027 if Amazon waited for Hurst to recover.

Instead, Amazon and Sony reportedly chose to move forward with a recast, allowing production to resume this fall rather than pushing the entire series back by more than a year.

The decision was undoubtedly difficult given how physically demanding the role is. Kratos is one of gaming’s most imposing protagonists, requiring an actor capable of carrying not only the emotional weight of the character but also the brutal action sequences fans expect from the franchise.

Dave Bautista Seems Like a Natural Fit

If Amazon needed someone capable of stepping into Kratos’ sandals on short notice, Dave Bautista is one of the few actors who immediately makes sense.

Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable action stars, Bautista built his career in WWE, where his imposing size and physical presence made him a believable powerhouse. Since transitioning into acting, he has consistently sought roles that showcase more dramatic range than many initially expected.

Audiences know him best as Drax across Marvel Studios‘ Guardians of the Galaxy films and Avengers appearances, but Bautista has also earned praise for performances in Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Knock at the Cabin, Spectre, and Army of the Dead.

Although Bautista has slimmed down considerably in recent years, few actors possess the combination of size, athleticism, and combat experience to realistically transform into Kratos on a compressed production schedule. His years as a WWE champion and his continued commitment to fitness would likely make him one of the easier actors to prepare for such a physically demanding role.

That practicality likely became an important consideration if Amazon truly wanted cameras rolling again before the end of the year.

Amazon Relationship May Have Helped

Bautista also isn’t a stranger to Amazon MGM Studios.

He previously starred in My Spy, My Spy: The Eternal City, and The Wrecking Crew for the studio. He is also slated to appear in Amazon’s upcoming Road House 2 as well as the studio’s remake of Highlander.

Existing relationships often matter when productions need to move quickly, and Bautista already has a proven working relationship with Amazon.

The Story Remains Unchanged

Despite the reported casting change, the overall direction of the series reportedly remains intact.

Prime Video’s adaptation will focus on the Norse-era God of War games, following Kratos and his young son Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Faye.

The series has already assembled a sizable supporting cast, including:

  • Callum Vinson as Atreus
  • Max Parker as Heimdall
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor
  • Mandy Patinkin as Odin
  • Alastair Duncan as Mimir
  • Danny Woodburn as Brok
  • Jeff Gulka as Sindri
  • Ed Skrein as Baldur

Former Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore serves as writer and showrunner, while Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes.

Fans Will Likely Be Divided

If the reports prove accurate, Bautista’s casting will almost certainly spark debate among longtime God of War fans.

Many had embraced Ryan Hurst after his casting announcement, especially given his deep voice and rugged appearance. Others questioned whether Hurst truly captured the larger-than-life physicality associated with Kratos.

Bautista swings the conversation in the opposite direction.

The big question will be whether he can get back to his wrestling size and capture Kratos’ emotional complexity—particularly the quieter father-son relationship that defines the Norse saga.

That said, Bautista has repeatedly demonstrated over the last decade that he possesses considerably more dramatic range than many expected during his WWE career.

Amazon has not officially confirmed the casting, and Variety notes that representatives for the studio declined to comment. Should the deal be finalized, however, one of gaming’s most iconic characters may soon have a new face.
