David Ellison may soon own CNN and that’s already becoming a topic of discussion across the media industry as Paramount Skydance moves forward with its proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to a report from Variety, some CNN employees are worried the change in ownership could lead to editorial shifts at the network. The concerns reportedly stem from recent changes at CBS News after Ellison installed The Free Press founder Bari Weiss as the division’s leader.

Variety framed the concerns around speculation that Paramount Skydance ownership might push CNN toward a different ideological direction following the merger.

However, David Ellison has publicly stated that CNN will retain editorial independence.

Ellison Says CNN Will Remain Editorially Independent

During an interview discussing the merger, David Ellison emphasized that CNN will maintain its editorial independence under Paramount Skydance ownership.

“So, look, I’ve said this since the beginning, which is, you know, for — when it really comes to — editorial independence will absolutely be maintained,” he said. “It’s maintained at CBS. It’ll be maintained at CNN. And, really, who we want to talk to is the 70% of Americans and really around the world that identify as center-left, as center-right. And we want to be in the truth business. We want to be in the trust business. And that’s not going to change.”

Ellison also praised the network’s existing newsroom.

“CNN is an incredible brand with an incredible team,” he said. “And we absolutely believe in, you know, the independence that needs to be maintained obviously for those incredible journalists, and we want to support that going forward.”

Rather than focusing on editorial direction, Ellison indicated that Paramount Skydance’s strategy will center primarily on distribution and expanding access to news through streaming platforms.

Streaming Expansion A Major Focus

Ellison said the company intends to expand the reach of its news operations across multiple platforms so audiences can access them wherever they prefer.

“CNN and CBS News are brands that we also really want to be a part of transitioning to streaming so that consumers have the choice,” he said. “If they want to watch our incredible news brands on broadcast, they can do that. If they want to watch on cable, they can do that. But we also want to create a world to where if they want watch on streaming, they can do that, and where we can really meet consumers where they are. We’re going to invest in the news business. And we think this is going to — this transaction will be a positive for both CBS News and CNN.”

CNN already launched a streaming product called All Access, priced at $6.99 per month, last fall. The network previously attempted a direct-to-consumer service with CNN+, but that platform was shut down less than a month after its launch in 2022 following Discovery’s merger with WarnerMedia.

The renewed focus on streaming suggests Paramount Skydance may see digital distribution as the most important growth opportunity for its news operations moving forward.

A Push Toward the Political Center?

While some media commentary has framed the potential changes as a political shift, Ellison’s own comments suggest a different strategy: targeting audiences who feel underserved by the increasingly polarized cable news environment.

His remarks about reaching viewers who identify as “center-left” and “center-right” indicate a possible effort to position the network somewhere between the ideological lanes currently occupied by major cable competitors.

Whether that vision ultimately reshapes CNN’s editorial tone remains to be seen.

For now, Ellison’s public message has been consistent: maintain newsroom independence while expanding the reach of CNN and CBS News across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms.

With the Paramount Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery deal still moving through regulatory and corporate processes, the long-term direction of CNN will likely remain a major point of discussion throughout the media industry
