David Harbour is finally addressing the controversy surrounding ex-wife Lily Allen’s West End Girl, and while the Stranger Things star isn’t interested in publicly relitigating the end of their marriage, he is making one thing clear: the story told on Allen’s album was not his experience.

In a wide-ranging interview with Variety, Harbour opened up about the difficult period that followed the release of Allen’s 2025 album, which drew intense public attention to their failed marriage and fueled widespread speculation about his private life. The actor also revealed that he suffered what he described as a mental health breakdown during the same period, as public scrutiny intensified around both the album and tabloid reporting about his personal and professional relationships.

Allen’s West End Girl became one of the most talked-about celebrity breakup albums in recent memory. While the singer acknowledged that the project used “artistic license” and admitted in previous interviews that she could not say “it’s all true,” the record painted a devastating portrait of an unnamed husband accused of infidelity, emotional manipulation, jealousy, and violating the boundaries of their marriage.

The album sparked a media frenzy almost immediately, with many listeners assuming the songs were directly about Harbour.

Allen’s lyrics described a husband who allegedly maintained a separate apartment for extra-marital encounters and grew resentful of her success. The accusations quickly became the dominant public narrative surrounding the end of the couple’s relationship.

Now, for the first time, Harbour is offering his perspective.

“It was weird,” Harbour told Variety. “I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that.”

Notably, Harbour refused to launch a public counterattack against Allen or dissect the specific claims made throughout the album. Instead, he repeatedly emphasized the importance of privacy and his reluctance to turn deeply personal matters into public entertainment.

“I can’t really say that much more,” Harbour explained, “because it’s my private life. In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it.”

Harbour Pushes Back Without Directly Refuting Allen

While Harbour declined to address individual allegations, he did offer one revealing comment that appears to summarize his feelings about the album as a whole.

“Stories are complex,” Harbour said. “And that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience.”

That statement is arguably the strongest response Harbour gives throughout the interview.

Rather than accusing Allen of lying or attempting to publicly defend himself point-by-point, Harbour frames the situation as two people experiencing the same relationship differently. It’s a carefully worded response that acknowledges Allen’s right to tell her story while simultaneously distancing himself from the narrative presented in West End Girl.

A Difficult Year for the Stranger Things Star

The West End Girl release came during what David Harbour describes as one of the most challenging periods of his life.

The actor revealed that he suffered a mental health crisis around the end of 2025, a period that coincided not only with the release of West End Girl but also widespread tabloid coverage and social media speculation surrounding his personal life.

“I had a breakdown,” Harbour said bluntly during the interview.

Harbour, who has previously spoken publicly about living with bipolar disorder, explained that extreme stress can trigger episodes and acknowledged that some of his public behavior during that period became the subject of online discussion.

“Under times of extreme stress, that can cause somewhat erratic behavior,” he said. “It’s embarrassing, and I’m ashamed of it. It’s not something I choose, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.”

The actor also criticized what he sees as a lack of understanding surrounding mental illness, arguing that many public conversations about the subject remain superficial and often ignore the realities faced by people dealing with serious conditions.

Moving Forward

Despite the public controversy, David Harbour appears focused on moving ahead rather than revisiting the collapse of his marriage and the release of West End Girl.

The actor is currently earning praise for HBO’s DTF St. Louis, preparing for the release of Violent Night 2, and will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday.

While West End Girl may have permanently shaped public perceptions of his relationship with Allen, Harbour’s comments suggest he has little interest in turning the breakup into an ongoing public feud.

Instead, he appears content to let Allen tell her story while maintaining that it was only one side of a much more complicated relationship.

For Harbour, the message seems simple: he respects Allen’s right to make art from her experiences, but he does not believe that album tells the whole story.
