A day of sun at Daytona Beach turned very scary as it wasn’t sharks that were attacking… instead it was a vehicle out of control.

A driver at Daytona Beach, Florida, notified his family he felt he was about to have a seizure. Moments later, the car he was driving was barreling through the toll booth and straight into the ocean at around 40 miles per hour. Families sprinted in a panic. A small child was struck in the water by the vehicle but is thankfully in stable condition at the hospital. We wish the child and their family a speedy and full recovery. As for the man’s family in his vehicle, they were stuck in the car which was now in the ocean until beachgoers were able to free them from the car. The driver regained consciousness but seemed to be unaware of what had happened according to news reports.
The incident is a reminder that we should always be vigilant even in places like the beach. With gratitude we can say that it appears there was no malice involved in this event that could have been an utter tragedy. Instead, it appears heroism and a lot of luck (or providence) is going to come shining through. If the injured child struck by the vehicle is able to fully recover, this will be one story that looked quite grim when it first hit the wires, but may end up just very scary.
We spoke to a resident of Daytona Beach who lives about a mile from the incident on the beach. According to the resident, there really wasn’t much in the way of sirens or police presence. We do not yet know if the driver was arrested or if he was allowed to have a license. Typically if you have a condition that causes seizures, states will not permit a person to have a driver’s license. We’ll update the story if that information becomes available, but at this time we have no evidence of foul play or negligence.
